Why does the new LEGO Marvel Magneto minifigure look different?

There's a new Magneto minifigure coming in 76281 X-Men X-Jet but it's design may have you scratching your head, deviating from previous minifigures.

Magneto is a rare character in LEGO Marvel, as are most of the X-Men included in the new 76281 X-Men X-Jet. Those who have been eager to pick up a new Magneto minifigure may be surprised by the depiction in the 2024 set though.

Magneto's design in 76281 X-Men X-Jet eschews the iconic red helmet in favour of a giant 'M' on his chest. This might be disappointing to anyone eager for his classic design but take note that this is more accurate to the source material of the 2024 set.

While previous X-Men models featuring Magneto have been based on X-Men overall and consequently used the iconic design, 76281 X-Men X-Jet is inspired by X-Men '97 specifically.

In the upcoming Disney+ continuation of the classic animated series, Magneto's design matches his new minifigure from the giant 'M' to the sleeveless costume. The box art emphasises this point with the X-Men '97 banner, similar to 76257 Wolverine Construction Figure's box.

Those hoping for a new Magneto minifigure with the classic design may want to hope for more X-Men models not based on the '97 series specifically, but nothing is confirmed.

The series is currently expected to release in early 2024 and 76281 X-Men X-Jet is planned to launch on January 1, 2024, for £74.99 / $84.99 / €84.99 alongside an array of other Marvel models.
