Watch LEGO Icons Project Hail Mary's function in action

LEGO Icons 11389 Project Hail Mary has a feature built into its display stand, and now we can see how the multi-function crank works.

The newly-revealed 11389 Project Hail Mary and LEGO Technic's 42221 NASA Artemis Space Launch System Rocket both combine play and display seamlessly, hiding the mechanisms within the stands themselves. Images of the sets don't communicate the exact functionality as well as videos, and the main feature of 11389 Project Hail Mary is well worth a watch.

The official online store has revealed a video demonstrating the functionality of the LEGO Icons set, which has been reuploaded to YouTube for easier viewing.

Turning the crank anticlockwise spins the whole Hail Mary spacecraft on the green Technic loop, but turning it clockwise dislodges the crew module so that it can orbit the main spacecraft. This means you essentially have two ways of displaying the set while activating the main function – with the crew module attached or in orbit.

The exact mechanism that allows for different functions depending on which way the crank is turned remains unclear. When facing the build, you can't see much of this mechanism, though it is more visible from the back. This matches LEGO Technic's 42221 NASA Artemis Space Launch System Rocket.

You can look forward to digging into the build or the online instructions to examine this mechanism when the set launches on March 1, 2026. 11389 Project Hail Mary is up for pre-order now for £99.99 / $99.99 / €109.99.
