The LEGO Star Wars community really wishes the UCS N-1 was yellow

The overwhelming response to the new LEGO Star Wars UCS N-1 Starfighter isn’t focused on the price tag, sticker count or minifigures, but simply that it isn’t yellow.

LEGO Star Wars 75442 The Mandalorian’s N-1 Starfighter is based on the salvaged version from The Book of Boba Fett, which is set decades after Naboo pilots were flying shiny yellow and chrome versions around in The Phantom Menace. But open any reddit thread, YouTube video or social media post on the new set and the top comment is almost always: why isn’t this set based on Episode I?

Take the most upvoted comment on our video interview with designer César Soares, for instance. “Would have loved a yellow Episode 1 version of this starship, it was my favourite as a kid and feels so vibrant and unique,” said etiennegarant7545. Their thoughts are echoed by a bunch of other commenters, including nakkari100, who added: “I am sure those who buy UCS are more [a] fan of the yellow version than The Mandalorian.”

Over on the reveal thread for 75442 The Mandalorian’s N-1 Starfighter on the r/lego subreddit, the top-voted comment reads: “Listen, it does look sweet. But I want yellow and chrome.”

We have technically had a version of this ship with Naboo livery in the Ultimate Collector Series, but it wasn’t really on the same scale as Mando’s N-1. 2002’s 10026 Special Edition Naboo Starfighter reimagined the minifigure-scale playset with chrome silver pieces, coming in at just 187 elements total. A modern version of that set would presumably be closer in size to 75442, only with drum-lacquered silver pieces instead of chrome.

What 75442 The Mandalorian’s N-1 Starfighter does give us, though, is a template to work from for a custom Naboo N-1. It’s not necessarily as simple as swapping out all the grey pieces for yellow, because Din Djarin’s ship is a stripped-back version of the starfighter, so you’ll need to tinker with the engines too. But it feels like a safe bet that someone in the community will cook up instructions for converting it to an Episode I variant.

This isn’t to say LEGO Star Wars fans are unanimous in preferring a Naboo version of the N-1. “I've got an admittedly weird take, here, but I actually prefer this model over the prequel ship,” said redditor 40_Minus_1. “I grew up on the original trilogy, was too much of a snob to like the prequels, so the yellow and chrome N1 just holds zero nostalgia for me.”

If you count yourself in that camp too, you’ll be able to buy 75442 The Mandalorian’s N-1 Starfighter from May 1 for £229.99 / $249.99 / €249.99. You’ll need to be signed up to the LEGO Insiders program for early access (it’s on general sale from May 4), and you’ll qualify for both 40917 The Darksaber and 5010320 The Mandalorian and Grogu Display between May 1 and 6 while stocks last.
