A Star Wars stand alone movie based on the character of Obi-Wan Kenobi may be in development at Lucasfilm.
The Hollywood Reporter cite sources linking Billy Elliot Stephen Daldry as being in talks to direct and potentially write a stand alone Obi-Wan Kenobi movie. Star Wars fans will react with joy, despair or indifference, depending on their personal take on the current direction of the saga.
Sources say talks are at the earliest of stages and that the project has no script. If a deal makes, Daldry would oversee the development and writing with Lucasfilm brass.
Daldry hails from the theater world and made his feature debut with Billy Elliot, which netted him his first directing Oscar nomination. He followed that up with searing dramas The Hours and The Reader, which also netted him directing nominations.
He most recently directed episodes of Netflix’s period drama The Crown, which garnered him an Emmy nomination.
Ewan McGregor has been petitioning for an Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off movie since Lucasfilm was acquired by Disney and announced the new stand alone movies, despite vocally complaining about the Star Wars filming process when working on the prequel trilogy.
Fans who are concerned about classic characters losing their mystique will take no solace in the article reiterating previous reports that movies focused on Yoda and Boba Fett are also in development.

LEGO sets for Star Wars: The Last Jedi will launch on September 1. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is due for release on December 14 in the UK and December 15 in the USA.
