Want to see how well Minas Tirith’s gift-with-purchase scales with the latest LEGO The Lord of the Rings set? Early reviews have the answer…
40893 The Lord of the Rings: Grond recreates the iconic wolf-themed battering ram from the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, and is free exclusively with 11377 The Lord of the Rings: Minas Tirith from June 1 to 7 (or while stocks last). Hoth Bricks has now published an early review that demonstrates how the two models look on display together.

Like the exterior of Minas Tirith, Grond is effectively microscale, and wheeling it up to the gates of the White City at least gives a tiny flavour of Return of the King’s climactic battle. The 307-piece set also includes a couple of orcs – one returning from 10333 The Lord of the Rings: Barad-dûr, and the other with an exclusive face print – but they are decidedly not to scale with the scene at hand.

“[Grond] is, in principle, roughly to scale with the gate of Minas Tirith, making it more symbolic than if the manufacturer had tackled the subject independently at a scale that would likely have resulted in a more polished and comprehensive model,” Hoth Bricks’ Will said.
“As it stands, it's very basic, even visually messy, and the battering ram only vaguely resembles the one seen on screen. You can have some fun making the suspended ram move forward and backward using the integrated mechanism accessible from both sides of the model.”
Beyond the green orc’s face print, everything else in 40893 The Lord of the Rings: Grond can be assembled using existing pieces. That’s good news for anyone who wants to build it without ponying up for Minas Tirith day one, although as Will notes, it’s also a bit miserly given this gift-with-purchase requires spending £579.99 / $649.99 / €649.99.
Still, it’s par for the course for GWPs at this point, so it’s probably not going to change any time soon…
