Scan your old LEGO sets for bonus LEGO Insiders points

The new LEGO Insiders program will allow you to retroactively earn bonus points on your existing collection, racking up credit towards discount vouchers without spending an extra penny.

From August 21, the LEGO Group is rebranding the LEGO VIP program as LEGO Insiders. While most of the fundamentals of the company’s loyalty scheme will stay the same – buy sets, earn points, spend points – the headline new feature is the ability to earn LEGO Insiders points no matter where you buy your LEGO. Scan the unique QR code in the instructions, and you’ll net a bonus 20 points.

It’s a relatively small amount compared to what you’d earn when shopping directly at LEGO.com, but every little helps. And the best part (at least at launch) is that it works retroactively: the QR codes have been in instruction manuals since 2018, so you can scan five years of instruction booklets for their bonus Insiders points (provided you haven’t already tossed them in the recycling).

The value of points is not changing with LEGO Insiders, so you’ll still need – for example – 800 points in the UK for a £5 discount voucher. That means you’ll need to scan 40 sets to earn a single voucher. If you’re in the US, a $5 voucher costs just 650 points – and the bonus 20 points is apparently a flat rate worldwide, so you’ll only need to scan 33 sets to rack up enough for a discount. In Europe, a €5 discount voucher requires 750 points – or scanning 38 sets.

Check out the table below for a quick guide to the number of instruction booklets you’ll need to scan to earn discount vouchers across the UK, US and Europe.

While this is obviously great news for anyone who’s bought tonnes of LEGO sets in the past five years (and subsequently held on to their instruction booklets), you’ll also be able to earn a bonus 20 LEGO Insiders points on all purchases going forward. That’s an added bonus whether you buy your sets through third-party retailers, at LEGO.com/in LEGO Stores, or a mixture of the two.

Once the LEGO Insiders program launches on August 21, you’ll be able to use your smartphone or tablet to scan the QR code in the instruction manual of any set released since 2018. You’ll then receive a prompt to go to either the LEGO Builder app or the LEGO Insiders Reward Centre. Choose the latter to register your set and earn 20 Insiders points instantly.
