The latest BrickLink Designer Program LEGO castle may appeal initially for nostalgic reasons, but stands apart from the crowd as a detailed and interesting build in its own right.
A fitting tribute to the Wolfpack faction that had its heyday in the '90s, 910057 Outlaw Forest Den will look vaguely familiar to anyone who remembers the Castle theme’s on-again-off-again flirtation with a black and grey colour palette. The real joy of the set, though, comes from its exquisite detail and methodical construction which, while potentially taxing at times for less experienced LEGO fans, provides a challenging and satisfying build experience that feels a cut above most LEGO sets.

The BrickLink Designer Program continues to go from strength to strength. A crowdsourced and crowdfunded initiative, the program involves fans submitting their own designs for consideration, before a public vote decides which five submissions in each series will be released in limited quantities for those willing to pre-order.
Invariably, a set that calls back to the golden age of LEGO Castle ends up being one of the most popular submissions, and invariably, these sell better than any other set. When 910057 Outlaw Forest Den goes up for pre-order on October 6, it’s unlikely that the set will struggle to find an audience, although thanks to a behind-the-scenes change in how stock is allocated, it’s less likely to sell out than some previous BDP castle sets.

A casual glance at this set is all it will take a long-time LEGO fan to recognise its inspiration. The build is designed entirely around the Wolfpack torso element from LEGO Icons 10332 Medieval Town Square, with eight of its 10 minifigures sporting this insignia on their chest, and several large stickered elements making it very clear who rules this particular roost. Subtlety is apparently not part of the Wolfpack’s modus operandi.
Yet while the building might look like little more than a nostalgic throwback to the days when the LEGO Group maintained a Castle theme, there’s a lot more going on beneath the surface. The large black and grey tower, complete with stickered flags, is actually the last part of the build to be put together.
Instead, things start humbly enough with the base of the model, before a wicked complexity curve makes it clear that this is no ordinary 18+ set. Putting 910057 Outlaw Forest Den together is a process of building up detailed terrain and internal rooms piece by piece, in a process that is a little more complicated and challenging than most sets the LEGO Group puts out, even among its growing ‘for adults’ offerings.
This is a set that knows its audience: only the most dedicated of fans will be camping out at the right time to pre-order this limited-run castle, only the most dedicated fans will truly appreciate that '90s Castle nostalgia, and only experienced builders will be able to put the set together without struggling. It is very clear that this is a fan build rather than something designed for LEGO laity – not that this is a bad thing. The set trusts that this is not your first experience with a LEGO brick, and as a result, LEGO fans can take this as an opportunity to flex their brick-building muscles.

By the time the tall, nostalgic tower clicks into place, you've already had a memorable experience. The nostalgia, then, comes as dessert after a filling meal; something sweet to leave a pleasant taste in the mouth.
It’s then that you can truly appreciate all of the many ways that the set can be opened up and explored. There are hidden nooks and crannies throughout, with multiple means of peeking inside, that make the set very fun to display. While this build probably won’t stand up to a lot of play – it has a habit of shedding foliage in particular – it makes for an excellent piece to put on a shelf and admire.
The minifigures here are among the best that the BrickLink Designer Program has been able to produce. The program requires fan designers to use elements – including minifigure printing – that is already part of the LEGO catalogue, so there are few opportunities for customisation.
For a set that is built around the Wolfpack torso, simply including a lot of these parts would have been enough. The set goes extra, though, providing either dual-moulded legs or leg printing for each of its 10 minifigures. Given that arm and leg detail has become such a talking point for LEGO fans in recent years, this inclusion not only feels generous, it also puts many more expensive LEGO sets to shame.
Our honest opinion: 910057 Outlaw Forest Den may be tricky for those with less LEGO building experience, but for those dedicated fans who appreciate the source material, this is the ultimate tribute to one of LEGO Castle’s most beloved factions.
