When your LEGO budget only goes so far, how do you choose which retiring sets to buy? That’s the dilemma I’m facing for LEGO Insiders Weekend…
The LEGO Group’s annual precursor to Black Friday is upon us, with LEGO Insiders Weekend set to take place from November 22 to 23. And it’s no secret that of the two events, this is arguably the better time to buy: not only are huge discounts on retiring LEGO sets reportedly on the table, the LEGO Group has also confirmed three gifts-with-purchase will be available alongside double Insiders points.
Those same deals and GWPs are believed to be returning for Black Friday alongside a handful of additional sales, but if previous years are anything to go by, double points is for Insiders Weekend only. In my mind that makes it the right time to take the plunge – especially because I can’t see many of the retiring sets rumoured to be discounted lasting all the way to Black Friday.
The problem now is… what do I buy? The length of my wishlist never seems to match up with my remaining LEGO budget (particularly at this time of year, after 11 months of being battered by flash sales, BrickLink Designer Program pre-orders and so on), so I’ve got some tough decisions to make. (Insert ‘first-world problem’ remark here.)
Well, I’m banking on you to help me decide: take a look through what I’m considering and let me know your thoughts in the comments.
31154 Forest Animals: Red Fox

At first glance this seems like a no-brainer to add on to something else from this list, but I’m still not sure whether I’d actually ever get round to building 31154 Forest Animals: Red Fox. The Creator 3-in-1 animals are neat, and I did just grab 31170 Pink Flamingo for 50% off in Amazon’s early Black Friday sale, but if I’ve still not felt compelled to grab the fox by this point, how badly do I really want it? 20% off might still be too little…
10297 Boutique Hotel

Full disclosure: this is one of three retiring LEGO sets on this list I already own. But I think they’re all strong contenders for doubling up on, especially with their rumoured discounts, several gifts-with-purchase and double points on top. 10297 Boutique Hotel is one of my favourite recent modular buildings, and there are plenty of fascinating alternate builds on Rebrickable to make use of a second copy.
76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City

76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City will apparently be 25% off during LEGO Insiders Weekend, bringing it down to just £195 in the UK. I’ve got the space on my wall, I’d really like those Joker and Catwoman Animated Series minifigures to go with the Batmobile, and I don’t think LEGO DC will bring us anything like this again any time soon… but I’m not convinced it’ll be a satisfying build. Let me know if I’m wrong about that one.
75354 Coruscant Guard Gunship

Here’s another retiring LEGO set I do already own, but with a potential 30% discount up for grabs it seems almost rude not to double-dip – especially as I could sell off the excess Padmé, Palpatine and Fox minifigures to recoup even more of the cost. I don’t necessarily need two copies of 75354 Coruscant Guard Gunship side by side, but I would like to have a go at recolouring a second set for a different legion. Hmm.
10305 Lion Knights’ Castle

This is the big one, and the set that’s giving me the biggest headache. Again, I’ve already got a copy of
What do you think? Where should I allocate my LEGO Black Friday budget this weekend, and what are you planning to pick up for LEGO Insiders Weekend? All thoughts in the comments are appreciated.
