With Pokémon on the horizon and long-running themes in Super Mario and Animal Crossing, Nintendo fans are spoilt for choice. 72046 Game Boy is a recent release signposting a shift towards more mature, display-focused builds, but there have been some gems already released over the years.

71411 The Mighty Bowser was one of the first display-focused LEGO Super Mario set. While it certainly kicks the theme up a gear in terms of size and displayability, it also comes with a steep price jump, retailing for £229.99 / $269.99 / €269.99. Thankfully, it often sees discounts, even at LEGO.com, so we're confident in recommending you wait for a deal for this posable, brick-built Bowser.

71435 Battle with Roy at Peach’s Castle
71435 Battle with Roy at Peach’s Castle has plenty to interest Super Mario fans, from an authentically detailed facade for the castle itself to the buildable Chomper. However, a 20% discount would make this a lot more palatable, especially considering none of the central characters of Mario, Luigi, or Peach are included in the set.

71436 King Boo’s Haunted Mansion
Speaking of impressive facades with expensive prices, 71436 King Boo’s Haunted Mansion delivers another well-loved location, but at an even more eye-watering price at £64.99 / $74.99 / €74.99. Once again, there's a lot to enjoy about this buildable mansion, especially complete with King Boo, but we'd recommend waiting to see if you can score it at a lower price.

71437 The Bowser Express Train
While 71437 The Bowser Express Train is a cool idea on the face of it, the end result feels a little cluttered with how many characters (none of which are overly desirable) are crammed onto the train. There's not much to miss out on with skipping this Super Mario LEGO set, so your money is likely best spent elsewhere.

72033 Donkey Kong & DK Jumbo
Priced at £29.99 / $34.99 / €34.99, 72033 Donkey Kong & DK Jumbo is a great entry point into Mario Kart, with both red and green shells and a banana to be thrown. Having already sold out on LEGO.com in the UK, you can still grab it at Amazon, so if you want an accessible way into the collection, now is the time to buy.

At just £12.99 / $14.99 / €14.99, 77046 Julian’s Birthday Party is a great source of accessories if you think of it like a pack of parts, despite it not offering a ton of value as a set. However, if you already own some Animal Crossing buildings, 77046 can help you to flesh out your builds even more and add more life to them.

77047 Bunnie’s Outdoor Activities
Conversely, 77047 Bunnie’s Outdoor Activities is a fairly empty build. Unless you're desperate for a Bunnie minifigure (who's exclusive to this set), this one is an easy skip.

77048 Kapp’n’s Island Boat Tour takes us to the very edge of a brick-built island, with two unique minifigures and a wealth of camping accessories. At a very reasonable price of £24.99 / $29.99 / €29.99, you get a lot of Animal Crossing bang for your buck here, making it a great companion set to an island house.

77051 Fly with Dodo Airlines
77051 Fly with Dodo Airlines recreates the iconic entry point to Animal Crossing, but it's not a location that players will return to often. Unless you're a hardcore Animal Crossing fan, you could likely skip this one, especially as its 535 pieces focus largely on the facade without many interior details.

77052 K.K.’s Concert at the Plaza
If we're talking well-trodden locations from the video game, 77052 K.K.’s Concert at the Plaza is a true must. Much like 77050, plenty of side builds and characters bring this set to life for a pretty reasonable £69.99 / $79.99 / €79.99. You'll kick yourself for missing out on exclusive characters like K.K. if you don't pick up this Animal Crossing spot before it retires at the end of the year.
