LEGO Marvel 76344 Iron Man Mark 3 Collectors' Edition is one of the theme's best builds, but you don't have to be limited to just the gold and red armour.
When we reviewed 76344 Iron Man Mark 3 Collectors' Edition earlier this year, we came away utterly astounded by the quality of the build. We were left wanting more Iron Man figures at this scale, and the online LEGO community has been quick to answer that call.
Tips and Bricks' response was to use elements from 75347 TIE Bomber – most of which can be ordered individually – to switch the Mark 3 armour to the Mark 5 from Iron Man 2. This armour is more jagged with a silver colour scheme, most of which is represented in the unofficial rebuild.
Tips and Bricks' take on the Mark 5 isn't quite as reflective as the official version of 76344 Iron Man Mark 3 Collectors' Edition, but it makes do with the parts available. There are innovative techniques to be found as well, including integrated stud shooters for the rear of the legs.
It proves that 76344 Iron Man Mark 3 Collectors' Edition is the perfect base for other Iron Man suits, and we can only hope that the LEGO Group pays attention. It's not hard to imagine a full line of these, with a new suit added every year.
We opted to order the elements individually rather than taking apart a copy of 75347 TIE Bomber, which meant we needed to swap a printed 2x2 circular tile for an unprinted variant. Note that the parts list provided on Rebrickable is missing a 2x6 dark bluish grey plate, a 1x4 light bluish grey tile and a 1x2 maroon tile. These are all easy to add to your order on Pick a Brick.
You'll find that the necessary parts cost around £30, and that you'll be left with a treasure trove of drum-lacquered gold elements removed from the armour. Alternatively, you can order just 75437 TIE Bomber for £59.99 / $64.99 / €64.99 and have everything you need in one place.
Those extra pieces and the set itself not only make the suit, but even the suitcase that the armour transforms from. We also opted to add the matching Mark 5 minifigure from 76125 Iron Man Hall of Armour, which is no longer available at retail. These combine to form a fitting tribute to one of Tony Stark's most unique suits of armour.
With any luck, the LEGO Group will see the demand and start a full collection of Iron Man suits based on 76344 Iron Man Mark 3 Collectors' Edition. For now, it's up to the community to keep expanding the collection one suit at a time.
