A 14-karat gold LEGO BIONICLE mask is back up for auction after originally selling for $33,000 – and time is running out to place your bid.
Forged from real yellow gold, the replica Hau mask – which originally belonged to first-generation BIONICLE character Tahu – is thought to be one of roughly 30 in existence, created by the LEGO Group for internal use and giveaways in the early 2000s. (At least five are believed to have officially made it into the public domain.)
This example surfaced at a Goodwill store in Pittsburgh, US, nestled among a box of random jewellery. When the store’s colleagues realised what they had on their hands, they placed it up for auction – and collectors swooped in for a bidding war that saw the price skyrocket to a staggering $33,000.
The 14k gold BIONICLE mask is now back up for auction, however, after the original winning bidder – who apparently boosted the asking price from $6,500 to $33,000 with a single bid – failed to pay for their new prize possession. At the time of writing, the second auction has around 15 hours left on the clock, with a current asking price of $11,000 after 20 bids.
The specific bid amounts are hidden until the end of the auction, so it’s tough to say whether a single bidder is responsible for inflating the price again – but either way, it hasn’t reached the same stratospheric heights as last time just yet. And time is running out to become the owner of this super-rare piece – even if it isn’t quite as unique as the one-of-a-kind platinum Avohkii mask.
According to old forum posts on BIONICLE fan site BZPower, one of the 14k gold Haus changed hands in 2013 for somewhere just south of $4,000.
