One object in LEGO Ideas Luxo Jr. presented a unique design challenge

While LEGO Ideas 21357 Luxo Jr. may appear to be a fairly straightforward design, one specific object in the build presented its own set of complications.

Fan designer Toby Brett’s winning LEGO Ideas submission is soon to become a reality, with 21357 Luxo Jr. launching on June 1, 2025. The 613-piece model is based on the playful Disney Pixar mascot that first appeared in a short CGI film in 1986, before going on to feature in the intro to every animated venture from the studio.

21357 Luxo Jr. is a fully-articulated model, one that allows builders to place the completed set in a number of display positions. In addition, the LEGO Ideas creation also comes with the iconic yellow Pixar Ball with blue stripe and red star, an object that presented Toby with its own unique design complications.

“The biggest challenge was definitely the ball,” said Toby in a new LEGO Ideas blog. “As all fan builders know, creating a sphere from rectangular-shaped bricks is very difficult. Originally, I struggled, and my prototypes were rather blocky, but after a lot of work, I ended up with something I was proud of.”

Despite the finished model evolving quite a bit from the initial LEGO Ideas submission, the Pixar Ball build in 21357 Luxo Jr. appears to have stayed fairly faithful to the look of the original version.

“The ball’s design actually remained very close to the concept in my submission,” Toby explained. “A new element helped perfect the ball’s roundness even more, and it’s also absolutely packed with Pixar Easter eggs!”

While we’ve yet to see any official images of the interior of 21357 Luxo Jr., the listing for the set does mention that the Pixar Ball opens up to reveal hidden Easter eggs inside that reference Disney Pixar movies such as Up, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Monsters, Inc., Toy Story and Finding Nemo.

Animation fans will be able to get their hands on 21357 Luxo Jr. from June 1, 2025, with the LEGO Ideas set priced at £59.99 / $69.99 / €69.99 for 613 pieces and available to pre-order now.
