76785 Thing's Apartment is much more than meets the eye: inside the relatively plain but sturdily built trunk, there are two rooms for the brick-built hand to unwind in. Even more exciting about this, however, is the simple mechanism that makes it all possible.

The chest itself is built in two halves, and when you first fit them together, you might be concerned about stability. In a few quick, ingenious clicks, however, you've got a wonderful hinge mechanism that stands up to inspection. It only uses a couple of 2x2 hinge plates and a slope on the front to lock it, and it's as sturdy as a non-LEGO chest, swinging open with ease and locking securely.

It's LEGO finesse at its finest, and you can only hope that LEGO fans across all interests won't be put off by the mini-doll style of the set to miss out on it. Remove the Wednesday-themed accessories, and you've got a hearty chest that could easily be adapted for a LEGO Castle or Pirate display. It would be an ingenious minifigure stand, with the interior entirely made up of plates that you could slot your most treasured characters on.

If you are a Wednesday fan, however, you also won't be disappointed. The accessories are cleverly thought out, offering everything a solo hand could need in its bachelor pad. A particular favourite is the nail varnish bottle, which actually opens to reveal a brush (created through a clever re-use of a minifigure broom).

Considering how delightful and effective the build is, and how versatile the final model of 76785 Thing's Apartment is, the price tag feels well worth your money. The LEGO Wednesday set is a breath of fresh air at a time when many LEGO sets seem to be returning to tried and tested formulas, demonstrating some savvy building techniques but in a way that's not going to break the bank.

If we could arrange the posable brick-built hand of Thing in a thumbs-up, we would do so for 76785 Thing's Apartment.
