LEGO says it’s ‘really helpful’ that all its Warner Bros projects have come along at once

The LEGO Ideas team says it’s ‘really helpful’ that its Goonies, Willy Wonka and Gremlins projects were all in development at the same time.

21360 Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory has just landed on shelves, 21361 Gremlins: Gizmo is right around the corner, and Delusion Brick’s Goonies project is also on the way at some point in the near future. Those three franchises are all under the Warner Bros. umbrella, which meant the stars effectively aligned for their development within the LEGO Ideas team.

Design Manager Jordan Scott told Brick Fanatics and other LEGO fan media that the LEGO Group had to re-establish a working relationship around Gremlins in particular, but with so many other Warner Bros. franchises under the company’s purview – including Batman and Harry Potter – it wasn’t what you’d call a complex process.

“We work with Warner Brothers a lot, so it’s kind of just approaching them again,” Jordan explains. “Obviously the Gremlins [sets] we had before, the contracts probably expired. So it was just a ‘Hey guys, we’re coming back.’ Fortunately, you know, we’ve been developing Gremlins, Willy Wonka and the Goonies, and they're all with Warner Brothers.”

As Jordan mentions there, Gizmo isn’t the LEGO Group’s first flirtation with Gremlins. The 1984 movie made its LEGO debut in 2016 with 71256 Gremlins Team Pack, a LEGO Dimensions expansion pack that includes two minifigures and two micro-builds. Neither of those minifigures has reappeared in 21361 Gremlins: Gizmo, although the moulds are presumably long gone now anyway.

Coincidentally, The Goonies is another franchise now returning to the LEGO fold through Ideas after initially debuting in Dimensions, with both ‘80s movies coming out on top in 2024’s If We Could Turn Back Time challenge. Those were voted on by fans, so it’s almost entirely by chance (rather than design) that the LEGO Ideas team ended up with three Warner Bros. projects in the pipeline simultaneously.

“It was actually really fun to work with them on three at the same time,” Jordan adds. “When we had meetings, it was like, let’s talk about Willy Wonka, and then let’s talk about Gremlins, and then let’s talk about the Goonies. So we could cover a lot, which was really helpful for us development-wise. And they were really fun to work with. They loved [Gizmo]. Every time we brought it in, there was oohs and aahs and like, ‘Can I steal it?’”

While we’re still waiting to find out when Delusion Brick’s Goonies project will hit shelves, it’s presumably not too far away given it was in development alongside two other sets that have now been either released or revealed. Check out the full slate of LEGO Ideas projects currently in development below. 21361 Gremlins: Gizmo launches October 1 and is available to pre-order now.
