The LEGO designer behind this new The Lord of the Rings model has explained why substantial side builds were included in this particular flagship Middle-earth model, from the tree to the textile tent.
"We knew we wanted to celebrate Bilbo's birthday party, that's a big part of this part of the movie, and so the most iconic part of that is his birthday speech when he pulls a trick on everyone so we introduced this," Designer Kenyon Andrew Brady explained, showcasing the tree stage's spinning feature to DuckBricks.
"We needed something substantial to build in that function for sure, but then the tree is also iconic to this scene. It's called the party tree in the books, and it helps contrast against the smaller tree on top of Bag End with the wind billowing over the hill and bending it.
"These beautiful textile elements help ground you in this old-timey world and add a cosy feel as well as break up the green a bit."
Together, the main Bag End model and the four side builds help to make up a more complete Shire scene focused on Bilbo's birthday party. One of the side builds also serves to remake a classic The Lord of the Rings set.
