Another LEGO Technic 1:8 supercar is rumoured to be racing into view this summer – and it’s now said to be setting a new record for the subtheme.
While the specific identity of the next addition to the biennial LEGO Technic Ultimate Car subtheme is still a mystery (although some fans suspect it may be a Lotus Emira), Instagram user bricky_news reports that it will include 4,104 pieces. That would make it the largest set of them all by piece count, eclipsing 2024’s 42172 McLaren P1 by 211 pieces.
Here’s a reminder of all five sets in this series so far, and how their piece counts compare to the rumoured 42232…
LEGO Technic Ultimate Car series
| LEGO set | Price | Pieces | Release date |
|---|---|---|---|
| 42056 Porsche 911 GT3 RS | £259.99 / $299.99 / €299.99 | 2,704 | Jun 1, 2016 |
| 42083 Bugatti Chiron | £319.99 / $349.99 / €369.99 | 3,599 | Jun 1, 2018 |
| 42115 Lamborghini Sián FKP 37 | £389.99 / $449.99 / €449.99 | 3,696 | Jun 1, 2020 |
| 42143 Ferrari Daytona SP3 | £389.99 / $449.99 / €449.99 | 3,778 | Jun 1, 2022 |
| 42172 McLaren P1 | £389.99 / $449.99 / €449.99 | 3,893 | Aug 1, 2024 |
What that table should tell you is that it’s really no surprise to see the supposed 2026 set come in at a higher piece count than its predecessors, because every single one of these sets has included more elements than the last one. If the LEGO Group keeps up this trajectory, we’ll presumably be into 5,000-piece territory by 2036.
The next LEGO Technic 1:8-scale supercar is currently believed to be dropping in July, and while it may have a couple hundred more pieces in the box, that apparently won’t impact the price. It’s rumoured to retail for €449.99 in Europe and $449.99 in the US – or the same price as 42172 McLaren P1, 42143 Ferrari Daytona SP3 and (following a price bump in 2022) the just-retired 42115 Lamborghini Sián FKP 37.
