LEGO Star Wars: Pieces of the Past will ‘push the envelope for fans’

The creators behind LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past have revealed just how much has been packed into the upcoming animated series.

Fans of a brick-built galaxy far, far away will have plenty to sink their teeth into from September 19, when all four episodes of LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past arrive on Disney+.

The sequel to last year’s smash hit animated series will continue the adventures of brothers Sig and Dev Greebling (voiced by Gaten Matarazzo and Tony Revolori respectively), but with more twisted takes on familiar characters, vehicles and settings.

“You have to start with what is the best way to tell the story,” revealed co-writer and executive producer Dan Hernandez in a recent interview with Fantha Tracks, “and then think about what characters really facilitate that.

“So, for instance, we knew we wanted something with Luke and Leia that was emotional and then we thought to ourselves, ‘Well, what can we do in this show that we couldn’t do in a different format?’ One thing we thought we could do with this new set-up is have them be with their mom and dad – something we’ve never seen before.”

Fans were already treated to a white-armoured Jedi Darth Vader in the previous series, but that thinking lead the LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past team to add another missing character to the animated show, one based on a rare minifigure.

“That made us think, “Well then, where is Padmé?’,” Dan continued. “We didn’t see her in the first set of episodes. What is she up to? So that’s where Pirate Queen Amidala came from.”

Not content to simply rest on their laurels, the LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past creators also realised they could take the show even further, adding in multiple nods to previous LEGO Star Wars movies, animation, sets and more.

“Okay, they’re letting us do another set of episodes,” said Dan, “so how can we push the envelope for fans who have been fans for a long time? That’s where things like Jaxxon, Darth Revan, Cal Kestis and bringing Ashley [Eckstein] back as Ahsoka came from.”

“Every step of the way, more Easter eggs would come in,” explained co-writer and executive producer Benji Samit. “First, in the script, we’d put some in, then we’d start animating it and our director would put some in, the animators individually would come up with ideas – we just kept layering things in. I don’t envy anyone trying to take notes while watching because there are Easter eggs that we still don’t know about!”

“In the fourth episode,” added Dan, “one of the goals was, what is the maximum amount of references to every show or movie that’s ever existed that we can work in? We didn’t totally succeed, but we got pretty darn close.”

LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – Pieces of the Past will be dropping on Disney+ on September 19, with all four episodes available for subscribers to start streaming.
