LEGO Star Wars might not be as grey of a theme as we think

LEGO Star Wars gets a lot of flack for being the source of huge grey sets, but is it really as grey of a theme as we think it is?

Scrolling through the LEGO Star Wars theme page on LEGO.com does present an overwhelming level of grey, but that might have started to change with 2023 releases for the theme. 75357 Ghost & Phantom II has plenty of colour and the ongoing focus on the prequel and Clone Wars eras means that we might well start to see more colours in builds to reflect the vibrant colour scheme of the animated series and the prequel movies, as with the red details on 75367 Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser and 75309 Republic Gunship.

But are these recent additions enough to break away from a lifetime of a theme's preference towards grey colours? The Washington Post dug into Rebrickable's data to see what colours are most prevalent in LEGO Star Wars, according to data rather than observations. It found that, while the top three colours are two shades of grey and black, broadening it out to the top nine colours revealed white, beige, blue, brown, red, and dark red were also featured.

This paints a much more varied, colourful picture than LEGO Star Wars than the theme gets credit for. While the most attention often falls on LEGO Star Wars UCS sets, which are predominantly grey due to the nature of the source material, the playsets, dioramas, and even helmets surely do a lot to broaden out the colour scheme. Even looking at 75309 Republic Gunship and 75357 Ghost & Phantom II, the base colour is white, not grey, highlighting that the longer LEGO Star Wars runs and the more niche ships get replicated in bricks, the more varied the colours become.

Looking forward, LEGO Star Wars designers have explained that the focus on the Clone Wars isn't going away anytime soon. Outside of the Empire, ships tended to be more colourful, with ships during the Republic being colourful and painted to reflect the personality of its owner, highlighting the opulence of the era. Even in Episodes VII through IX, the First Order leaned towards black ships, while the Republic stuck to white and orange. The Clone Wars, thanks to its animation, offers a far more diverse colour scheme, so no matter where LEGO Star Wars turns its focus, we can likely expect brighter sets like those pictured above, rather than the grey triangles that the theme has been known for over the years.
