LEGO Marvel's legacy of Spider-Man 2 sets isn't huge, mostly spanning a wave of builds in 2004. With Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man recently returning in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the LEGO Group found the perfect excuse to release another minifigure based on the Sam Raimi version of Spider-Man in 76261 Spider-Man Final Battle. That opportunity has now been expanded on with the first full-blown Spider-Man 2 set in more than two decades, which serves up a simply fantastic recreation of the iconic New York subway train design, both inside and out.

Outside, 76321 Spider-Man vs. Doc Ock Subway Train Scene's train is rife with details specific to this sequence, such as the webs holding debris from buildings, smashed windows, and two spaces to pose the Spider-Man minifigure in the movie-accurate position. The inclusion of the original LEGO Trains logo (much like the 2004 set) is another appreciated detail, but it only gets better.
The scene-specific elements can be removed entirely, leaving just a few Technic axle holes on the side of the train. This results in an impressive scaled recreation of a subway car that is perfect for city displays. It's great to see just how closely the designers have followed the concept of the 2004 model, while modernising the build to be more in line with current sets and their level of detail.
The interior of the train features two control panels, one of which is broken, and two rows of seats. There's not much room for minifigures to walk down the train, but there is plenty of space to sit them down looking out of the windows. It's just enough room to be functional and look good, like any other LEGO passenger train.
The minifigures in

Doc Ock's minifigure is an excellent depiction of the character, but his arms are the stars of the show. The LEGO Group has experimented with several different variations of the robotic arms over the years, using a mix of pieces from Technic and System. This time, the designers have struck nearly the perfect balance between play and display. The clip and bar-compatible elements used for the arms allow for a wide range of motion and are both easy to move as well as sturdy when posed. The claws at the tip cannot close, which is the only downside, but they're still sufficient for this scene.
The new Spider-Man minifigure has a fair amount of detail, from the exclusive ripped torso design to a new head featuring a pair of fantastic expressions. The best part of this set has nothing to do with the minifigures, though.
As a big fan of LEGO trains, I was eager to see how the LEGO Group's recreation of a New York subway car would work on LEGO track, but the instructions initially have you build the train with wheels that cannot rotate. Thankfully, this is quickly revealed to be just one of two options for the train, striking yet another balance between display (when the wheels need to be straight) and play (when they need to turn left and right).
Changing the wheels between these forms is incredibly easy, and when you place the train on tracks – none of which are included in
At £44.99 / $54.99 / €49.99, this LEGO Spider-Man 2 set offers relatively fair value, and you may find yourself grabbing multiple copies on sale to make a more complete train. An additional section of track or even the bridge would have been appreciated, but would also have driven the price higher when they aren't fundamental to the model.
