LEGO PlayStation content in sets: a potted history

Rumours of a LEGO PlayStation console set have us digging into the history of the gaming company and its references in physical LEGO models.

One of the latest LEGO rumours posits that a recreation of the first PlayStation console is coming later this year, and it's not the first time the LEGO Group has partnered with PlayStation. Though their partnership hasn't been quite as fruitful as the likes of Nintendo, there's a substantial number of references and inclusions in physical LEGO sets to go over ahead of the rumoured build.

Though there have been no console recreations in sets just yet, here's a potted history of every time PlayStation has appeared in a physical LEGO model, not counting the multi-platform LEGO Dimensions game.

The Marvel's Spider-Man Easter eggs

The LEGO Group's continued collaboration with Marvel has been one of the most prominent opportunities for PlayStation content in physical sets. This includes the two limited-edition minifigures explicitly based on the PlayStation video game. One was offered at San Diego Comic-Con, and another was available as part of a sweepstakes, but these are the only examples of explicit LEGO Marvel's Spider-Man content in the entire portfolio.

There have been plenty of other homages to the game franchise, though. Both 76175 Attack on the Spider Lair and 76178 Daily Bugle include Easter eggs based on the game. The former's computer screen features a screenshot of a game inspired by the title, while the latter references J. Jonah Jameson's podcast from the series.

A more notable reference can be found on the box art of 76329 Miles Morales' Mask, where the logo for the set is identical to that of the Miles Morales video game. Whether as a marketing tactic or a sneaky reference, it's part of the potted history of PlayStation content in physical LEGO sets.

76308 Spider-Man Mech vs. Anti-Venom is one of the most recent LEGO Marvel mech models, and the latest based on Spider-Man. One of the features that helps this set stand out from the other Spider-Man mechs is the white details throughout the colour scheme. It's likely a subtle homage to the Advanced Suit from the Spider-Man game series. That's not to mention the inclusion of Anti-Venom, referencing part of the third game.

LEGO Horizon

PlayStation content in official LEGO sets has blossomed in recent years, including the start and continuation of the Horizon sets. The first LEGO Horizon set launched in 2022. 76989 Horizon Forbidden West: Tallneck was one of the most surprising LEGO sets of the year. It was unlike anything else we'd seen before for video games at the time. It aims to appeal to a distinctly older audience, and it opened the door for a much bigger collaboration between the LEGO Group and Guerrilla Games.

77037 Aloy & Varl vs. Shell-Walker & Sawtooth is the second LEGO Horizon set and the first to be based on the LEGO Horizon Adventures game. The game marked a major step in the partnership between the LEGO Group and PlayStation, and the model comes with an exclusive minifigure. The PlayStation inclusions don't quite stop there, though.

Speed Champions and Gran Turismo

The other PlayStation game series to feature in physical LEGO sets has so far only appeared in Speed Champions. Gran Turismo has a variety of concept cars designed for the games, three of which have been recreated as physical LEGO sets. 76918 McLaren Solus GT & McLaren F1 LM and its accompanying recruitment bag were the first in 2023, depicting the unique vehicle and setting the standard for these LEGO Gran Turismo sets.

76923 Lamborghini Lambo V12 Vision GT Super Car was next in 2024, and this is the only car in the collection so far to include the logo for the game series in the set. You can spot the sticker on the spoiler of the now-retired LEGO car. This year's 77253 Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo is also part of the range, depicting the vehicle created by Bugatti for the most recent game in the series, as well as Gran Turismo Sport.
