Today is LEGO Play Day 2024, and the LEGO Group has cooked up an exclusive minifigure for employees taking part.
Once a year, the LEGO Group unshackles its employees from their desks and lets them take part in organised play activities. It’s an initiative designed to give LEGO staff time to relax, unwind and really appreciate the spirit of the product they spend the rest of the year working with. And it’s seemingly also designed for the rest of us to look on with envy – not least for the exclusive parts handed out to employees.
Last year, the LEGO Group designed an exclusive detective torso for its mystery-themed Play Day, complete with ‘Play Day 2023’ printed on the back. LEGO designer Justin Ramsden has now shared images of the LEGO Play Day 2024 minifigure on X (formerly Twitter), which once again consists of an exclusive torso combined with otherwise generic minifigure parts.
This year’s torso is a bit simpler than 2023’s, depicting a collared white jacket with ‘Play Day’ printed on the reverse. It’s accompanied by what appears to be an equally-exclusive 1x1 round tile printed with the number 24, which ties it specifically to this year’s event. Whether either of these parts will find their way into the wild remains to be seen, but if they do, they might not be as expensive as you’d imagine.
Last year’s Play Day 2023 Detective minifigure is surprisingly plentiful on BrickLink, for example, where you can currently cop it for just over £10 (before delivery fees). Elsewhere, 2x4 bricks printed with ‘Play Day’ from 2018 can be had for as little as 86p – so if you’re collecting exclusive LEGO company memorabilia, make sure to keep an eye on the secondary market in the weeks and months ahead…
