LEGO’s paper-based packaging transition hits a major milestone

The LEGO Group has revealed that a significant target has now been reached in its ongoing journey to source packaging from sustainable sources.

A plan to switch from single-use plastic to paper-based bags was announced by the LEGO Group back in 2020, with the first such sustainable packaging appearing in 2022. The company’s progress to do so continues apace, with confirmation today that over half of the LEGO Group’s packing lines have now switched to paper-based alternatives.

The news is being celebrated by the LEGO Group as a significant milestone, with five factories already utilising paper bags, with more to follow in the next few years. The company has revealed that 56% of packing lines have now replaced single-use plastic bags with sustainably sourced, technically recyclable paper-based options, but there’s still more work to me done.

“We are on an ongoing continuous improvement journey,” said VP, R&D packing and packaging, Jesper Toubøl. “Once the roll out of bags is complete, we’ll explore ways to enhance and continue to make the bags, and the building experience they offer children and families, ever better.”

The transition to paper bags is being referred to by the LEGO Group as ‘phase one’ of the process, with packing lines in the company’s factories in China and Vietnam now largely complete. The current plan is aiming for full implementation in the remaining factories in the Czech Republic and Hungary by 2026, followed by Mexico in 2027.

The LEGO Group is currently using paper bags made of material from well-managed Forest Stewardship Council certified forests, recycled materials, and other controlled sources.

The company has also confirmed that it is looking into ways to boost the speed at which its packing lines work, in order to enable their output to surpass that of the plastic packaging machines that are being phased out.

As things currently stand, 93% of the LEGO Group’s packaging by weight is made using paper, cardboard and other paper-based materials, making a large proportion of all LEGO packaging fully recyclable.
