After years of little to no interest in the world of LEGO Pirates, my mind has been swayed almost solely by one of 2025's best new themes.
I never saw much appeal in the world of pirates as a child. Whether it be from a fear of sailing or that the concepts of adventure and swordplay were fulfilled by other classic LEGO themes, I just didn't find anything to love, like or desire in anything to do with pirates, LEGO sets or otherwise.
I came into the world of LEGO long after the end of the original Pirates theme, but I chose to miss out on the more recent revivals of the theme due to my lack of interest. Not even Pirates of the Caribbean could bring me into the fold, as much as I enjoy the films. The concepts of pirate ships, fortresses and islands didn't seem fun to play with or build, and a distinct lack of pirates and pirate toys in my childhood left me with no sense of nostalgia as I grew up.
My first LEGO Pirates purchase was in the form of 2018's 31084 Pirate Roller Coaster, purchased more for my love of theme parks than Pirates, but it was at least an introduction to this classic theme for which so many fans are nostalgic. This brief look into the world of LEGO Pirates would create a chance for the theme to one day work its way into my life properly, but with the help of a personally more beloved licence.
The introduction of LEGO One Piece earlier this year was personally met with a mix of surprise and excitement. I found it hard to believe that the worlds of my favourite hobby and anime would be mixing, even if it was based on the live-action Netflix series, yet they were.
After delighting in the quality and accuracy of the first season of the adaptation in 2023, my excitement for the LEGO sets was peaking, and this was the final straw that would finally make me a LEGO Pirates fan for life. By incorporating characters for which I do have nostalgia, high-quality and unique pirate models, three of LEGO One Piece's five sets have opened my eyes to the swashbuckling lifestyle, and only now do I realise what I've been missing out on.

Series 8's Coconut Cape will make the perfect base for my LEGO One Piece Marines minifigures, and somewhere to dock the Going Merry next to on display. I expect that this is just the beginning of my journey into the world of LEGO Pirates, and while it's a shame it took me this long to fall in love, I'm glad that One Piece was able to open my eyes to the world of seafaring swashbucklers.
