The LEGO NINJAGO team is open to more diverse minifigures

LEGO NINJAGO's latest chapters include the debut of a Serpentine ninja, but it's clear that the team is open to more diverse characters in the future.

In nearly 15 years of LEGO NINJAGO, the core team has only ever been made up of the standard human minifigures, but now that the realms have been merged, times are starting to change. The latest season of the series (and a new set) has debuted Frak the Serpentine as a member of the core ninja team, alongside the likes of Arin and Sora.

It's a huge shift for the theme, which almost always depicts Serpentine as villains in the physical sets (though they have been distinctly neutral for a while in the animated series). Now that Frak has joined the team, it represents a shift in ideologies for NINJAGO, and senior designer Dimitrios Stamatis has shared more insight into Frak's debut and what it means for the future of NINJAGO.

"For Frak, it was something that came up when discussing what the season was going to be initially, with the shadow dojo, the ninja's rivalry, having Cinder and creating an opposite team of students," shared Dimitris in an interview with DuckBricks. "Frak came up, and I've always said that it would be cool to get more races, if that's the appropriate term, for ninjas."

"It's fun because this is the world of NINJAGO. You can have anyone as a ninja; you can have a Skulkin ninja, potentially. This is something that, if we can service it at any point, it's to the benefit of the story."

Frak's debut as a member of the ninjas is exciting, but his minifigure only comes with a masked head at the time of writing, obscuring almost all of his snake-like features, and leaving out his pupils to feature just two colours on the hooded element.

"Within the constraints, we did Frak's minifigure the way we did," Dimitris added. "Maybe we can do more with him, who knows? But it's also a nice element to have if you want to do your own Serpentine ninja. There's no reason why there can't be a variety of characters there."

The 561-piece LEGO NINJAGO 71844 Ninja Combat Vehicle is available now with the only Frak minifigure to date for £79.99 / $99.99 / €89.99. You can currently score double points on all LEGO sets on the official online store, ready to spend on discounts on future NINJAGO sets.
