The LEGO minifigure celebrates 46 years of characters

The patent that brought forth the familiar design of LEGO minifigure turns 46 today and 2023 has been a standout year for the LEGO characters.

On August 29 1977, the Danish patent office received the patent for the LEGO minifigure from the LEGO Group, marking the start of a long and continuing journey for the iconic figures. 2023 is the 46th birthday of LEGO minifigures and it's been a significant year for minifigures so far.

Eight months into the year, we've seen the return of some memorable minifigures from LEGO The Lord of the Rings in 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell and Pirates in 10320 Eldorado Fortress. There have also been several familiar but new minifigures from Indiana Jones in an all-new wave as well as members of Star Wars: Rebels' crew in 75357 Ghost & Phantom II – out September 1.

It's worth noting the updated Hogwarts architect minifigure in 76419 Hogwarts Castle and Grounds, adding plenty of detail to the original advent calendar minifigure as well as an exclusive brick.

It's not just about returning characters for LEGO minifigures in 2023 as new minifigures for the LEGO Group have been featured in 76261 Spider-Man Final Battle, as well as new iterations of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man.

For Disney's 100th anniversary, a minifigure milestone will soon be reached thanks to the first LEGO Walt Disney minifigure in 43230 Walt Disney Tribute Camera. LEGO DREAMZzz's launch brought some especially interesting minifigure pieces as well as a new type of LEGO figure.

Three LEGO Collectible Minifigures series also released, or will be released, this year bringing with them plenty of new characters from original ideas to Disney icons and on September 1, another round of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

However, by far the most interesting LEGO minifigure entries this year aren't minifigures, but two sets dedicated to them. Both 40504 A Minifigure Tribute – exc;usively available at the LEGO House – and the widely-available 40649 Up-Scaled LEGO Minifigure celebrate LEGO minifigures like few sets before them.

While you'll need to head to Billund to grab 40504 A Minifigure Tribute, 40649 Up-Scaled LEGO Minifigure is available now for £44.99 / $49.99 / €49.99. You can read our review by clicking here. Here's to 46 years of LEGO minifigures and, hopefully, 46 more.
