LEGO Marvel 76344 Iron Man Mark 3 Collectors' Edition taps into design language built across two different themes and various sets.
Every LEGO set builds (sometimes literally) on the ones that came before, and 76344 Iron Man Mark 3 Collectors' Edition is no different. While speaking to MiniSuperHeroesToday, the set's designer, Aaron Newman, discussed how even the most minute aspects of design language feed into considerations for new sets.
One example in 76344 Iron Man Mark 3 Collectors' Edition is the base, which reflects similar features found in LEGO Star Wars buildable figures.
"We're following cues from the Star Wars team, for instance, who have done more of these buildable figures," said Aaron. "The design language of the base is in line with 75434 K-2SO, 75398 C-3PO, that sort of thing. If you have both, you can display them together."
However, it's not only design aspects from similar sets in other themes that Aaron and the team took on board, but also what's currently on shelves within LEGO Marvel.
"76327 Iron Man MK4 Bust that is on shelves currently is slightly bigger in scale," explained Aaron. "The way I look at the bust series primarily is the core of the head on the bust in the scale that we've set there, at a four-stud core. Meanwhile, something like 75398 C-3PO has a different scale, closer to a three-stud core of the head. Here, the core of 76344 Iron Man Mark 3 Collectors' Edition is also three studs.
"That may not sound like a big difference, but of course, that has a cascading impact on the scale of the whole model. If you pick this model up and also have the bust, you're going to get a different build-up, a different experience, a totally different scale from each other.
"But they're also designed to look good on the shelf at the same time. That's why there's a line in between the plaques, for example, this is more in line with the Marvel busts' design language than the Star Wars UCS language for that reason."
