LEGO Marvel's new Daily Bugle is much smaller than the last, but several differences between the two prove that bigger isn't always better.
76178 Daily Bugle has now sold out ahead of its upcoming 2025 retirement, but following immediately in its footsteps will be 2026's 76342 Spider-Man vs. Mysterio: The Daily Bugle. The new take on the newspaper's headquarters is much smaller than the last set, but comes in at a more affordable price point to boot, while still being compatible with other LEGO buildings (also on a smaller scale).
One look at the statistics of each set reveals just how different in size these two models are, designed for entirely different audiences with alternate budgets. Despite these differences, 76342 Spider-Man vs. Mysterio: The Daily Bugle is a good replacement for the retiring modular building, and there's more in common between the two buildings than you would think.
The layout
The biggest difference between 76178 Daily Bugle and 76342 Spider-Man vs. Mysterio: The Daily Bugle is connected to their biggest similarity. Aside from their difference in size, they both opt for alternate architectural styles that give the 2026 set a wholly new look in comparison. This also comes with a higher level of detail than 76178 Daily Bugle. In fact, the 2026 set is closer in colour scheme to 2013's original Daily Bugle set.
The hues of brown are more visually appealing than the greys of the 2017 Daily Bugle, and while the new set has a quarter of the piece count of 76178 Daily Bugle, 76342 Spider-Man vs. Mysterio: The Daily Bugle has a comparable interior. 76178 Daily Bugle features four floors, including the lobby, the bullpen, a photocopy room and Peter Parker's office, as well as J. Jonah Jameson's office at the top.
76342 Spider-Man vs. Mysterio: The Daily Bugle matches this number of floors and most of these interior spaces, eschewing only Peter's office and the reception area outside of Jonah's office. Considering just how much smaller the 2026 set is, this is an admirable effort, though the level of detail is much lower, as you would expect. These smaller rooms still manage to contain enough Easter eggs to satisfy fans and serve the same function as the larger Daily Bugle, for a fraction of the cost.
The similarities continue outside, with both Daily Bugles featuring some kind of rooftop decoration and a newsstand to their right. The newsstands are both coloured green, though the new one is a darker hue, and they have a comparable build with some of the same elements used (and a near-identical sticker). Though it's not in the same place, both Daily Bugles also feature a New York manhole cover, and we'd note that the 2026 version is rusted, suggesting that it has been outside for a few years.
The minifigures
There's no avoiding the fact that 76178 Daily Bugle has many more minifigures than 76342 Spider-Man vs. Mysterio: The Daily Bugle. Comparing the full minifigure selections of both sets wouldn't be fair, so instead, we're looking at the characters that appear in both builds and how they differ. Spider-Man has lost the dual-moulded legs in 76342 Spider-Man vs. Mysterio: The Daily Bugle, but he at least retains the arm printing and is otherwise identical. Ghost Spider is precisely the same between the two sets, but Miles has ditched the hoodie in the 2026 model.
Mysterio is the only recurring villain between the two sets (unless you're counting the symbiote between Venom and Venomized Captain America). He has a less comic-accurate look in 2026, taking inspiration from his MCU counterpart, with a new head print to boot. Jonah has also changed, opting for a new hair piece and an outfit borrowed from the LEGO Ideas The Office set. Thankfully, the best part of the 76178 Daily Bugle minifigure has remained. The face print with the webbed mouth alternate print is present in 76342 Spider-Man vs. Mysterio: The Daily Bugle, helping complete a great Jonah minifigure.
The intended audiences
With the vast number of differences between the retiring 76178 Daily Bugle and the new 76342 Spider-Man vs. Mysterio: The Daily Bugle, it's evident that the two sets have been designed for different target audiences. The minifigures and size of the 2021 model are better for collectors with more of a budget, while 76342 Spider-Man vs. Mysterio: The Daily Bugle targets younger fans or those on a smaller budget. It consequently cuts back on the interior detail and the overall minifigure selection.
The new building is more visually appealing, but presents worse value compared to 76178 Daily Bugle and each set's price. 76178 Daily Bugle has 3,772 pieces and 25 minifigures for £299.99 / $349.99 / €349.99, while 76342 Spider-Man vs. Mysterio: The Daily Bugle has just 781 pieces and seven minifigures for £99.99 / $99.99 / €109.99. Despite being around a third of the price, the 2026 set only has around a quarter of the pieces and minifigures compared to the retiring build.
Ultimately, fans with a desire for a LEGO Daily Bugle who haven't yet picked up 76178 Daily Bugle will be left with no choice but to grab 76342 Spider-Man vs. Mysterio: The Daily Bugle. The 2021 set has now sold out for good. Thankfully, 76342 Spider-Man vs. Mysterio: The Daily Bugle is a decent deal with the details it manages to include and the several similarities to its larger counterpart. Bigger isn't always better when it comes to the LEGO Daily Bugle, but it is in some areas.
You can pick up 76342 Spider-Man vs. Mysterio: The Daily Bugle from January 1 for £99.99 / $99.99 / €109.99.
