LEGO Marvel Captain America vs Red Hulk Battle is giving us déjà vu

With an upcoming LEGO Marvel set rumoured to have a hefty price-per-piece ratio, it's giving us flashbacks to a poorly received LEGO Star Wars set.

The latest LEGO Marvel rumours, as reported by Instagram user a.clay.brick, state that 76292 Captain America vs Red Hulk Battle is expected to release in December 2024 with a rumoured price of $54.99 for 223 pieces. Even by LEGO Marvel standards, a theme with a long history of overpriced sets, that's pretty wild.

The set is said to feature minifigures of Sam Wilson, Joaquin Torres (the new Falcon), Red Hulk as a bigfig, and Ruth Bat-Seraph. The bigfig could be part of the reason why the price is high but doesn't entirely explain it.

The rumours have got us thinking about another overpriced set that recently hit shelves: LEGO Star Wars 75385 Ahsoka Tano's Duel on Peridea, also priced at $54.99 but for the slightly more generous 382 pieces. While stacked with excellent minifigures, the set drew criticism from fans for being essentially a collection of minifigures, with limited detail going into the actual buildable set itself.

"The terrain is just a grey slab on which to pose those characters," Brick Fanatics' Chris wrote in our detailed review. "The play features are half-hearted – you can recreate Ezra’s jump to the Chimaera, except it’s more like a limp fall, and the rotating platforms are all operated independently – and the build feels oddly overengineered for what you’ll end up with."

The reason why most LEGO Star Wars fans are still likely going to want to pick up 75385 Ahsoka Tano's Duel on Peridea lies squarely on the minifigures – so we're hoping 76292 Captain America vs Red Hulk Battle will knock it out of the park when it comes to the characters as well. As it stands, this will be the only LEGO Marvel set with minifigures based on the upcoming Captain America movie, with the other two rumoured sets attached to the film being a BrickHeadz set and a buildable figure.

As such, this could be the only chance to get your hands on Sam, Joaquin, Red Hulk, and Ruth Bat-Seraph as minifigures – and the chance for the LEGO Marvel designers to go big on detail and quality for all four characters.

It also raises the question of whether LEGO fans will continue to overpay for minifigures they're unlikely to get elsewhere. All five minifigures in 75385 Ahsoka Tano's Duel on Peridea were exclusive to the LEGO Star Wars set and the same could prove to be true for 76292 Captain America vs Red Hulk Battle, considering the limited number of sets for the movie.

Being willing to pay and being happy to pay are two different things, however, and if this becomes a regular occurrence across multiple themes, LEGO fans might start to get exasperated. Price is a common complaint amongst the LEGO community, sometimes understandably so, and gatekeeping high-interest minifigures in overpriced sets is rarely going to be a popular decision.

Of course, we won't know for sure what 76292 Captain America vs Red Hulk Battle could bring or if it's actually on the way until we get an official confirmation from the LEGO Group. Remind yourself of the other rumoured and confirmed LEGO Marvel releases in 2024 below.
