LEGO's new Iron Man is proof that yes, we did need another one of these

LEGO Marvel 76344 Iron Man Mark 3 Collectors' Edition is one to behold in the new year, offering up a LEGO set like never before.

What better subject matter for the LEGO Marvel team to go all out in design ingenuity and bravado on than a full, anatomical study of Tony Stark’s Iron Man suit? Stark’s whole character (and that of Robert Downey Jr.) embodied centre-of-attention showmanship that belied a level of depth to his motivations and ultimately his actions.

76344 Iron Man Mark 3 Collectors' Edition is not only a deep study of the design of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s central hero from the past two decades, but also one of the smartest, quite amazing LEGO models of recent times. It has that same flash, stylistic appearance that at first will hold your gaze from pretty much any angle. But it also has a level of depth and detail hidden under all that boldness.

LEGO Marvel 76344 Iron Man Mark 3 Collectors Edition review 41 683x1024

There have been and still are a number of similar LEGO Iron Man sets of late – we’ve had buildable figures in the past, we’ve had a larger model of his helmet, and we’ve most recently had a bust too (built at a slightly different scale to this). Likewise, we’re in an era of buildable LEGO figures – from up-scaled minifigures through any number of LEGO Star Wars droids, and from Transformers and large-scale NINJAGO mechs to even Fortnite’s Mecha Team Leader. In whatever way you look at it, 76344 is releasing into a crowded market, so it needs to stand out.

And stand out it very much does, carving a niche for itself by offering up something for the older or more experienced LEGO fan. 76344 Iron Man Mark 3 Collectors' Edition takes two very familiar concepts for LEGO fans right now – LEGO Iron Man and large buildable figures – and creates a version of Tony Stark’s suit like we’ve never seen before, and a LEGO set the likes of which you will definitely have never built before.

First up, 76344 looks the part. From spot-on proportions head to toe to the distribution of those metallic gold parts across the armour, to the stance and poseable options, this model stands tall and impresses, from any angle. Anywhere you look bodywork catches your eye, from smooth contours to perfectly placed curves and angled tiles and plates, whilst the areas that your eyes naturally go to and are most important to get right – the head, the arc reactor and the hands – are all excellently built with fascinating techniques.

Yet you can’t say all the attention to detail has solely gone into these key areas, because wherever you then look there is detail upon detail, built through clever parts usage or unexpected techniques or – in a lot of cases – both.

And to say that 76344 Iron Man Mark 3 Collectors' Edition is peppered with details in tribute to the design of the Iron Man suit seen across all three Iron Man films, Age of Ultron and even Spider-Man: Homecoming is true, but it doesn’t feel like it does justice to what this LEGO set truly is. Indeed, perhaps it is most accurate to label all these points and features across the model as pure design insights.

76344 is a deep study of anatomy of the Mark III suit, designed in a way that – as is the case with all the best LEGO sets – feels fresh and new, and genuinely teaches you something new. There is a level of understanding about the LEGO medium that has been brought to this set that feels more advanced than most anything else this particular theme has offered before.

Whether this is one of your first LEGO sets or your 100th, 76344 will impress and cause you to pause at particular moments in sheer admiration for some of the techniques, often weaved in at unexpected parts. You'll think it’s just a case of building an upper torso, lower torso, leg, leg, upper arms, forearms, hands and head, all with LEGO bricks you are very familiar with in look and feel, and solely in dark red and drum-lacquered gold. But there are stages of this build where you'll end up watching your hands use these familiar bricks in ridiculous ways, and there are other junctures where you turn a corner and place a single piece on to the model in such a way that you can’t help but go ‘wow’.

There are some little moments like placing the legs into the torso that you may not notice at first, until you connect those legs to the feet and stand and Iron Man’s stance begins to become apparent. There are mind-boggling placements of other parts like the tiny gold corner tiles that make up the ‘hinges’ on the suit’s knees – now those plates underneath that were sitting off-grid make a whole lot of sense. And there’s the big one staring you right in the face as you look around the model from almost any angle: there are almost no anti-studs or undersides to pieces anywhere.

This is a 360-degree model with tight corners, fussy shaping and precise angles, and it is smooth in every spot. Honestly, this is a LEGO set that feels like it’s just showing off, and we can’t help but love it for that.

Buildable LEGO figures and characters have been fun to put together in recent months, and it’s because of the approach that the LEGO Group and its individual themes continue to take to them. Each one is new and unique, and given full respect to the source material. Each one sets out to meet particular design challenges and each one tries to bring something new to the table. That depth of understanding to what makes these types of models so interesting and fun to build is why each one feels different and makes a success of itself.

And in that respect 76344 Iron Man Mark 3 Collectors' Edition is no different in being different. It enters into a crowded market, but comes to the fight fully suited up with all manner of fancy ideas and insights you have never seen before. It looks the part and it plays the part, and not only stands out in that crowded market, but soars above it, as only Iron Man would.
