Super Mario is embarking on a new adventure in 2022 with a trip to Luigi's Mansion, a series of spin-off games focusing on the less famous Mario bro as he explores a haunted house, hotel or even entire valleys full of ghosts to avoid or defeat.

71399 Luigi's Mansion Entryway positions itself first and foremost as an add-on to 71401 Luigi’s Mansion Haunt-and-Seek, but it still needs to stand on its own two feet if you're not picking up that larger set. So, can it justify its place in the wider LEGO Super Mario line-up? Let's find out.

While the name of 71399 Luigi's Mansion Entryway might make it seem like one of the more uninspired stops on the LEGO Group's tour through Luigi's Mansion, this miniature manor module is more than capable of providing a complete experience, despite likely being designed as an introduction to 71401 Luigi’s Mansion Haunt-and-Seek.

The set is named and described as an entryway to the larger mansion, but successfully stands alone as a complete LEGO Luigi's Mansion experience, with enough spooky interactive elements to collect those coveted coins around which the entire LEGO Super Mario experience is geared.

The adventure starts outside the intricate gates, with curved pieces that make for some of the most detailed designs seen in LEGO Super Mario yet. This section has nothing to scan and nothing to affect the digital experience, acting as a way to set the mood of this eerie abode.

Pushing your way through the gates, the entryway stands directly in front of Luigi, though the first stop on our review will be off to the side. Bogmire ominously stands above a grave, as if they were rising out of it, ready to spook and scare Luigi. The ability to knock Bogmire off their perch and defeat them feels as satisfying as it did in the original title.

The entryway itself is home to the main feature of the set, with the doors able to mysteriously open thanks to a sliding section that you'll be using a few times to get in and out of the mansion. This function is like nothing we've seen before and shows the variety that the Luigi's Mansion sets can bring to the wider LEGO Super Mario theme.

The build encourages exploration too, with a hidden bone that can be given to Polterpup outside, displaying an adorable thanks from the undead dog on Mario or Luigi's tiny chest-mounted screen.

Luigi's Mansion has a cast of iconic characters that feature throughout each of the games, from one-time bosses to recurring companions. Those familiar with the games will likely be drawn to 71399 Luigi's Mansion Entryway thanks to the exclusive inclusion of Polterpup, who is recreated faithfully in bricks from tail to tongue, even down to his red collar.

Keeping with the theme of the spin-off series, the only enemies in the model are Bogmire and a Boo, two ghosts. The former is also exclusive to the set and is a deep but familiar reference that fans of the games will enjoy, with a great build that is recognisable but doesn't go against the cubic nature of LEGO Super Mario.

Boo works just as well, and has only featured in one other set previously – 71369 Bowser’s Castle Boss Battle Expansion Set – making this rare appearance another reason to consider 71399 Luigi's Mansion Entryway come January 1. Their design hasn't changed at all, but pairs well with the subject material either way.
