LEGO Ideas Orange Cat has been in the works for years

LEGO Ideas 21376 Orange Cat has just been revealed, but experimenting with the fur colour is far from a recent move.

Although 21376 Orange Cat is making its debut in 2026, the idea of a ginger cat is not a new one among the designers at the LEGO Group. Fan designer Damian Andres' original submission was a Siamese-Birman cross that evolved into 21349 Tuxedo Cat, and now into 21376 Orange Cat, but there was discussion years ago about working on a ginger colour for the Ideas set.

“With ginger cats, it’s very difficult with the colours that we have," said LEGO Ideas Design Manager Jordan back in May of 2024. "There’s not really a good colour that works. It’s either going to be bright orange, like fire, or it’s going to be a kind of muddy brown. Nothing was really working.”

Fast forward to 2026 and it seems like LEGO Ideas has finally got it working, upon the request of Target. As well as orange being a highly requested cat colour among fans, the US retailer requested an orange cat LEGO set as a retailer exclusive – and so the upcoming LEGO Ideas set was born. 21376 Orange Cat's ginger fur is actually made up of medium nougat LEGO pieces – a colour decision that was much easier to nail down two years on.

"As soon as we started on this project, medium nougat was chosen immediately, beyond a few initial explorations," said Model Designer Chris McVeigh during the reveal of 21376 Orange Cat at LEGO Fan Media Days. "From the get-go, we envisioned this cat as being medium nougat because it was the closest representation that we felt to the fur of an orange cat."

Medium nougat was an option for a colour back in 2024, but perhaps it just took a fresh set of eyes to see the colour's potential in 21376 Orange Cat.

LEGO Ideas 21376 Orange Cat is available to pre-order now for £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99 ahead of its launch on March 1, 2026.
