The LEGO Group has officially revealed this year’s exclusive LEGO House set, which serves up a tribute to one of its oldest and quirkiest themes.
40506 LEGO Fabuland Tribute includes four brick-built figures based on characters from the 1979 theme, which ran all the way through to 1989 in some regions (making it one of the LEGO Group's longest-running themes). A sort of spiritual predecessor to Animal Crossing, this group of anthropomorphic animals was also pitched as an early gateway between DUPLO and regular System sets in the days before 4+ was a thing.
The four characters depicted in 40506 LEGO Fabuland Tribute – which was designed by LEGO House Master Builder Stuart Harris and LEGO Senior Designer Markus Rollbühler – are Edward Elephant, Joe Crow, Dr. Lucy Lamb and Clive Crocodile. They’re situated atop a black display base, in line with previous LEGO House exclusives, and are accompanied by a brick-built tree.
“Creating stories is at the core of LEGO House, and celebrating the most iconic moments in time throughout the LEGO Group’s history is key to the concept of our exclusive products,” said LEGO House Managing Director Kathrine Kirk Muff. “On a personal note, I played a lot with the original Fabuland sets, and I am filled with nostalgia and excitement to see my childhood memories being brought back to life.”
This 1,026-piece model is the sixth set in the LEGO House exclusive series, and pays tribute to Fabuland not only through its build, but also through its instructions – which, like those of the original sets, include a short story depicting the characters having fun building the model. It’s illustrated here by LEGO House Associate Master Builder Didac Perez.
“Each year, I find great joy in creating the LEGO House exclusive set together with Markus and everyone at the Idea House and LEGO House,” added Stuart. "Fabuland holds a very sentimental place in my heart. Having spent so much time with our history collection and product archive, I was always captivated by the series. You can really see the influence it had on the storytelling themes of future series from the LEGO Group, including NINJAGO, Friends, BIONICLE and more.
“From re-imagining each character to designing the storybook that comes alongside the product, it is an absolute honour to bring them to life once more in the form of this sixth edition of our LEGO House series.”
