Reviewing 76463 Hogwarts Castle: Hospital Wing is a rollercoaster of emotions. At first glance, it feels like one of the less detailed, less exciting extensions to the ever-growing Hogwarts Castle. The exterior is pretty simple: an open balcony, a rocky outcrop, and minimal decoration on the roof. Does it really feel worth £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99?

The real joy in building, however, comes from the interior. Spin it around and there's a set of three immaculately detailed rooms, each functioning as an independent diorama from one another. A particular favourite is the lowest level, with a wardrobe hiding a Dementor Boggart, which has a second form as a spider wearing rollerblades. There are also various other beasties and magical creatures tucked away in Lupin's office, underlining the richness and detail that we've come to expect from the ongoing Hogwarts collection.

But now you're back at the top of the rollercoaster again, it's time to push my glasses up my nose with a 'well, actually'. Considering licensed LEGO sets tend to be accurate to the source material, it's hard to place 76463 Hogwarts Castle: Hospital Wing in the timeline.

The basement is squarely in the trio's third year. We have Remus Lupin as the Defence Against the Dark Arts Professor, with his office decorated to fit it, complete with two versions of the Boggart.

Come up to the second floor and you'll find minifigures of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, dressed as they are at the end of the third movie, but it's the third floor that sets your Timeturner senses tingling. This is only the second-ever look inside a brick-built Ravenclaw common room, inhabited by Penelope Clearwater. It's a tastefully decorated space, with the starry decorations on the ceiling a particular highlight.

There's also a hidden space for Rowena's diadem, guarded by the Grey Lady herself, back for the second time as a minifigure with a whole new look. This is where the timeline breaks down, as the events related to the diadem don't happen until the seventh book or the eighth movie.

When taken with all the other recent Hogwarts Castle sets, that's all well and good. When there are multiple sets that all feature scenes from different timestamps, it feels less jarring, but having scenes set years apart in such a compact set is harder to digest.

Indeed, that speaks to a wider point about taking sets like 76463 Hogwarts Castle: Hospital Wing on their own, highlighting how tricky they are to appreciate as solo sets. Where some earlier editions, like 76435 Hogwarts Castle: The Great Hall, worked as independent models, 76463 Hogwarts Castle: Hospital Wing feels like it relies on other sets from the collection to make sense.

The exterior is nothing to write home about, but it surely works well alongside more turrets and rocky outcrops. The interior has plenty of details to love, but there's a lot going on over a wide time period for one solo set, and those stories are better fleshed out by corresponding moments from other builds. It's a shame because the two Boggarts, the Ravenclaw details, and the minifigure-dense space should be a delight from start to finish.

What you're landed with instead is a set that has its highs – but also its lows. The detail and storytelling make you really want to love it. Ultimately, however, it's hard to do so fully if you don't own the rest of the collection. That will set you back several hundred pounds at this point, which is no small ask in the modern age of LEGO.

£89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99 feels like a worthwhile price for a set of this detail, with the high amount of minifigures per square inch that you get – but that isn't the only cost associated. For true fulfilment of 76463 Hogwarts Castle: Hospital Wing, you need to splash out on the full range, and that's a tricky ask even for the hardiest of collectors.
