LEGO Godzilla may be roaring on to a store shelf near you in the years to come, as a monster based on the latest movies has stomped its way to 10K on LEGO Ideas.
The Japanese icon has enjoyed a resurgence in Western cinema over the past decade, thanks to Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla, Godzilla: King of the Monsters and – most recently – Godzilla vs. Kong. It’s the design of the monster from those movies that served as the inspiration for Matthew Esposito’s LEGO Godzilla project, which he originally uploaded to LEGO Ideas in January 2021.
It's taken just over two years, but his towering design has now roared past the 10,000-vote mark to progress to the first 2023 review. The LEGO Ideas team will now decide whether to turn it into an official LEGO set, which would likely arrive on shelves in late 2024 or early 2025, based on current timelines from review to release.
“I was really blown away by the new look of the Godzilla in these newer movies,” Esposito wrote on his project page. “I was fascinated by how this new iteration of Godzilla was designed, and I thought that this new look would translate incredibly well into LEGO.” The builder also pointed to the release of Godzilla vs. Kong as reason to support the set, although it will now be better timed for its untitled sequel, which is due out in 2024.
Godzilla is not only an icon within his own franchise, but has also traded blows with Marvel characters including the Avengers, Fantastic Four and S.H.I.E.L.D. The monster is pretty much a household name by this point, so it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that the LEGO Ideas team would give this set the green light.
We’ll find out for sure when the results of the first 2023 review are announced, which will probably be in October. Here’s a round-up of all the sets in this review so far.
