LEGO Editions Nike Air Max 95’s design has a surprising origin

The vibrant colours and dynamic design of LEGO Editions 43025 Nike Air Max 95 can be traced back to the surprising development of the original shoes.

The LEGO Editions theme will be welcoming its first sneaker release next month, thanks to the upcoming arrival of 43025 Nike Air Max 95. The brick-built footwear is in turn based on the iconic ’90s shoe, one that drew its main influences from two very unusual sources.

43025 Nike Air Max 95 features muted shades of black and light graphite, along with bold accents of neon yellow, matching the look of the original sneakers. Yet that same striking visual style and colour scheme initially faced resistance from within Nike during the shoe’s development, with some divided on the footwear’s then unusual appearance.

The Nike SNKRS blog reveals that designer Sergio Lozano created the Air Max 95 for larger, more powerful runners who required maximum cushioning. The shoe was later inspired by the idea of it having been created by nature, with layers being revealed due to rain eroding soil, along with a first-of-its-kind black midsole intended to mask dirt after runs.

In addition, the Air Max 95 took many of its visual cues from the human body, with nylon ‘speed-lacing’ eyelets and a lacing system based on ribs, a shank outsole and heel derived from the spine, and muscle fibres and flesh represented by a mesh and suede upper.

Even more eye-catching were the Air Max 95’s colours, mostly well-captured in 43025 Nike Air Max 95, and continuing to prove just as distinctive now as they did when they made their debut more than 30 years ago.

"The neon yellow was not new. It was obviously part of our colour palette,” stated Sergio. “It was also part of our heritage, you know? It's part of Nike racing heritage. Let's use colour to emphasise the technology and some of the functional things we're trying to do with the shoe.”

A similar look is evident in 43025 Nike Air Max 95, with the LEGO Editions model including what may be stickered elements to mimic the breathable fabric of the sneaker, grey and white angled slopes for its laces, and sand blue pieces standing in for the shoe’s grey gradient.

43025 Nike Air Max 95 launches on March 28 priced at £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99, alongside the Air Max 95 Big Bubble sneaker, a physical wearable created in close collaboration with the LEGO Group.
