43279 WALL-E and EVE represents the third LEGO set to spin out of the 2008 animated movie, but it’s easily the most impressive to date. In fact it's even more so than 21303 WALL-E, a 677-piece LEGO Ideas model that dropped in 2015 based on a project by fan designer Angus McLane, an animator who worked on the original film.

Arriving in a black 18+ box and split across two instruction manuals, 43279 WALL-E and EVE gets off to a perfect start with WALL-E himself, a charming build that’s absolutely bursting with character, playability and display options.

The Buy ‘n’ Large Corporation’s trash-compacting robot is a pure exercise in making the most out of every single one of its pieces, in order to complete a model that’s easily more in scale with its source material than 21303 WALL-E, with the latter being larger but constructed with fewer pieces.

Not that a reduction of parts has any effect on the look and playability of WALL-E though, with every piece earning its place in the build, including a handful of Technic elements and impressive printed parts, such as the front of the character’s opening front trunk, tarnished warning labels on the arms and large, expressive eyes.

In addition, WALL-E features a moveable and tiltable head that can be raised and lowered, plus articulated neck eye units, arms and fingers, all of which combine to add plenty of essential emotion to the brick-built version of the character, along with functional rolling tank treads and moving wheels.

Of particular note are WALL-E’s arms, which can be moved up and down, as well as back and forth along an L-shaped track, meaning that the character can pull-off a number of movie-based poses, pick up his included LEGO garbage cube and interact with the rest of 43279 WALL-E and EVE’s robotic cast.

Speaking of which, builders will also be able to construct their very own version of EVE (Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator), a white egg-shaped robot that could have presented something of a challenge for the LEGO Disney design team, but instead is yet another triumph.

EVE may appear to be a deceptively simple model, but there’s some clever engineering going on underneath to achieve her distinctive ovoid shape. That starts with a basic box design that’s enhanced with Technic pieces and ball and socket joints, then covered up with smooth plates and white curved windscreen elements.

Not only is EVE pretty much movie-accurate, but the model also features a surprising degree of poseability built in, such as a head that can be rotated and tilted, a pair of arms that can be pulled out of the character's body and moved around, and a removable front panel with printed leaf icon to conceal a small boot with plant accessory inside.

A clear and trans-clear stand gives EVE the illusion of hovering, a simple effect that works well and also provides a stable base for the robot. The only minor niggle that could be aimed at the character is that only one set of printed eyes have been included with the LEGO Disney model, so you’re essentially stuck with a single expression to look at.

Rounding out 43279 WALL-E and EVE is M-O, a small build of the diminutive cleaning robot who serves on board the starliner Axiom. The model perfectly captures the look of the tiny (but determined) character, and the build even manages to squeeze in a moveable head and arms, printed eyes and a spinning cleaning roller assembled from three Technic cog elements.

Combined together, the trio of brick-built ‘bots represent an exceptional and thoroughly satisfying LEGO Disney set, making this an essential purchase for all fans of the animated classic. Thanks to some clever parts usage, a scaled-down look for WALL-E and spot-on designs for all three characters, 43279 WALL-E and EVE definitely deserves to be a must-have purchase.

Fortunately, 43279 WALL-E and EVE’s very reasonable price point should ensure that the LEGO Disney set will remain a consistent seller for some time to come, especially for those who are looking for a faithful and charming build to add to their own collections.
