LEGO City 60511 Vintage Steam Train successfully stands out as one of the theme's most unique and appealing train models to date. It both depicts something rare for modern-day LEGO sets and makes worthwhile sacrifices for an affordable price tag.
The new train opts for a vintage appearance rather than the various modern models we've seen over the past few years. It's starkly different to anything we've had for quite a while, making it a must-have for newer LEGO train enthusiasts with something in their home already.

The build in 60511 Vintage Steam Train consists of the train itself with an engine, a tender and a carriage, as well as a small station. There's also a handful of LEGO track pieces, rather than a full loop as you might expect. The station itself is a useful addition, but nothing to get too excited about – and aside from a lamp, there's nothing distinctly vintage about it.
The platform serves its purpose and has no significant downside, but nothing particularly noteworthy either. The buffers are the only standout feature, though they're not particularly complex. An effort to expand the scope of this station would have been appreciated, especially when the set has fewer than 600 pieces for £80. That's still far better than most LEGO trains, though.

The main build in 60511 Vintage Steam Train is the titular train itself, representing a classic style of locomotive that is sure to fill you with a sense of nostalgia. The train is on the smaller side, with only one carriage, but it looks the part with an elegant colour scheme and refined shaping. There's not a lot to see inside, but given the high quality of the exterior, 60511 Vintage Steam Train's main build more than makes up for it.
The contents are rounded out with five minifigures. These are just enough to populate the train, but nothing is exciting to see here. There's no sunflower lanyard, no exclusive print, just some appropriate characters with no more necessary.
At £79.99 / $£89.99 / €89.99 and with only 575 pieces included, 60511 Vintage Steam Train is lacking compared to standard sets, but the bar has been set so low for LEGO trains that this new release somehow seems generous by comparison. The set manages to reach that relatively low price (for a LEGO train, remember) thanks to what it lacks.
And for anyone else with an existing LEGO train collection, 60511 Vintage Steam Train is an incredibly refreshing experience precisely for what it lacks, rather than what it includes. There's no full loop of track; no motorised components – but I have far too much track in my collection already and don't need any additional track pieces, never mind another full loop. I suspect there will be many other train fans out there in the same boat.

60511 Vintage Steam Train makes the wise decision to eschew all but a single straight section of track and one of the recent ramp elements. This makes the set playable, but avoids bloating the price tag with the larger track pieces. The same tactic is applied to the motorised elements.
There is not a single electronic element to be found in 60511 Vintage Steam Train, though you are welcome to add them in with an additional purchase. You can also swap them from a LEGO train already in your collection. We've seen this approach recently in 60423 Downtown Streetcar and Station, although given that was a tram rather than a train it felt less surprising there.

And what might at first glance seem limiting is actually a benefit here, as such pieces can dramatically raise the price of a model. Leaving them out means that this is one of the most affordable LEGO trains ever released. It positions 60511 Vintage Steam Train as something for the existing LEGO train fan, though, rather than someone new to the hobby.
Such fans are still welcome to pick up 60511 Vintage Steam Train, but they'll want at least extra track pieces from 60205 Tracks, too (and perhaps motors from the Powered UP section of LEGO.com). The approach is worth the risk, though, as 60511 Vintage Steam offers something genuinely refreshing and worthwhile after years of much more expensive train models.
60511 Vintage Steam Train will be released on June 1, 2026, with 575 pieces for £79.99 / $89.99 / €89.99.
