The Black Pearl is back in the form of LEGO Icons 10365 Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship – who knew this was the pirate ship we’d all been waiting for?
LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean is back – eight years after the last set in the theme’s name and 14 years after the theme proper, only this time with the LEGO Icons treatment. Much the same as with LEGO The Lord of the Rings, 10365 Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship represents an ageing up of a previously playset-based LEGO theme.

And the result of getting the more adult LEGO Icons treatment is, quite simply, everything that 10365 Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship is. Here is the most thorough, most detailed, most intriguing and most rewarding LEGO Pirate set you will have ever built, be that under the POTC moniker or the wider LEGO Pirates catalogue. It’s a grand statement with acknowledgement to such a rich history, but an easy one to make once you take a closer look at all that 10365 offers in LEGO experience.
The accuracy and depth of study around the Black Pearl that 10365 offers makes for a fascinating rediscovery of an iconic ship from more than 20 years ago. Such is the variety of techniques and ways in which the bodywork of the ship comes together, there’s a lot to appreciate in the build process that holds your attention throughout.

Likewise, the size of the final model is mightily impressive. The included minifigures are practically dwarfed when placed around the deck or up on the masts with how large the model is. The detail throughout the LEGO set is impressive, both for how much is worked into every corner and angle, but also for how none of it feels just for the sake of it, or at the expense of too many bricks. Everything small and interesting as its own thing comes together so satisfyingly well for the good of the final, overall structure.
Everything mentioned up to this point can and does set 10365 Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship apart from any other Pirate or Imperial ship you may have ever built from LEGO before. These factors worked into the set are becoming the identifying traits of LEGO Icons sets in general. They define what the theme is offering older LEGO fans, showcase the very best of LEGO design, and make for some really excellent and quite definitive LEGO sets. And for everything mentioned above, 10365 is no different.
Yet, 10365 also happens to be quite different. Because the LEGO Icons team didn’t stop at offering ‘just’ the most definitive, detailed LEGO version of the Black Pearl. They offer one that happens to also include not one but two game-changing concepts that fundamentally rewrite how we will look at LEGO Pirate ships moving forward.
Neither is necessarily obvious on the box art, but both introduce ideas that will stay with you long after you have built the set, not only for how they are the two most hands-on aspects to the ship’s display and play potential, but also for just how much they advance what a LEGO pirate ship could and should be in 2025.
We are talking about a play feature centralised around the cannons, and a design feature that offers up two very different display options for the final model. The play feature that impresses us so much here hinges on an incredibly smart but effective internal structure that is built into the lower levels of the inside of the ship’s hull. You build, in effect, two long strips that run the length of the model that can be shifted from the centre of the ship to its respective sides, with the turn of a couple of nozzles on the outside back side. Connected along each strip are a row of excellently designed cannons, and built all around these are flooring, the ship’s hull and then the next level of the ship on top. What you end up with is two wonderfully designed rows of cannons and a very simple gearing system to position them ready for firing on either or both sides of the ship.
It’s a relatively simple-looking design and it is very well executed in both function and form, meaning that beyond working as intended (albeit a little stiff in places), it is excellently camouflaged amongst all the detailing of the model. But for building it, you wouldn’t know it’s all in there, and if you haven’t built it and come to turn the nozzles and activate the feature, it’ll feel like real LEGO magic.
There have been many LEGO pirate ships over the years and many have offered different takes on play around cannons, but this feels particularly special for how it genuinely reimagines what’s possible in such a clever and effective way. Trust us, the first time you turn the nozzle at the back and eight gun ports all lift open and a cannon pokes out of each, it’ll make you smile.
The second game-changing design consideration that has been worked into 10365 Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship centres around giving us two different ways in which to display the finished model. Be warned: for just how good an idea it is, we can’t believe it hasn’t been thought of before, and it’ll only ruin every other LEGO pirate ship you have built before for not having such a feature.
In short, you can display the ship on a couple of display supports, with the hull fully complete, out of the water and in its entirety. However, the bottom part to the hull and the lower section of the rudder are separate, and can be pulled off from the rest of the model. That offers up a flat ‘waterline’ look for the ship for those wanting a more play- or action-oriented option. It’s such a good idea, it adds an extra dimension to the LEGO experience and offers a consideration towards LEGO fans and their different wants and needs around such sets that is much appreciated.
The number of extra pieces needed to give us both options should be considered, particularly with a relatively hefty price all round for this set, but it makes for a really impressive out-of-the-water display of the entire ship, and the sort of presentation that you’d really want other similar ships to match.
Ultimately, 10365 Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship is the sort of LEGO Icons set that is akin to the recent The Lord of the Rings sets from the theme. It takes something well known from a couple of decades ago in pop culture, which has a previous LEGO history too, and offers up a fully adult, wholly detailed LEGO experience, across build, design, features and artistry. In more ways than your high expectations of such a set may already be, these sorts of LEGO sets offer something new to something familiar, and leave you with an even greater appreciation of what LEGO is capable of as a creative medium.
The name of the set is silly and the LEGO Group is being a bit unusual about it, whilst the price will rightly cause you to pause, placing this at the upper echelons of what’s possible to reasonably save up for with a LEGO set – but at least what’s in the box delivers something truly fantastic. Value for money is debatable, particularly for the US and EU prices here. While it may struggle to sail off store shelves on day one, it will sit as a must-have for many, and a must-watch for when the next promotion comes around.

Our honest opinion: 10365 Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship is obviously the best Pirates of the Caribbean LEGO set of all time, but may also be the best LEGO pirate ship of all time…
