LEGO Batman’s voice pays homage to past Caped Crusaders

The voice behind LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight’s title character reveals how past portrayals of Bruce Wayne’s alter ego informed his interpretation.

One of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight’s many standout features is its impressive full voice cast, with even minor Gotham City NPCs getting their own lines and quips. However, when it came to the game’s Caped Crusader himself, a new and unique interpretation of the DC Comics character was required.

Brick Fanatics recently sat down with Shai Matheson, the latest voice behind the LEGO Bat cowl, for an exclusive interview to discuss his take on the World’s Greatest Detective and how following in the footsteps of past actors proved to be the role’s biggest challenge.

“I’ve been so immersed in Batman my whole life,” Shai explains, “especially the visual medium, that it was just there and so whatever came out was a mix of all of those actors. Luckily for me, this game is a mix of all previous Batmen, so I guess it worked.

“At the same time, it was sort of none of the other Batmen and that’s what [TT Games] were after. They played me stuff in the first session and I was like, ‘I don’t know about that. That doesn’t sound like Batman.’ And they were like, ‘No, no, no, that’s exactly what we want!”

That back and forth between Shai and TT Games eventually led to the actor finding a voice that manages to channel multiple Batman eras and the various actors who have portrayed the Caped Crusader in other media, creating something new without being a mere imitation.

“You know, no one can ever replicate what Troy Baker and Kevin Conroy did,” says Shai regarding the former LEGO Batman actor and the voice behind Batman: The Animated Series respectively. “And we definitely didn’t want to sound like the LEGO Batman Movie, because that’s its own universe, its own story.

“In a way, I had to completely ignore the fact that these amazing actors have played this part before, because I’d never want to imitate them. We try to sort of pay homage, pay respect to all of those versions and just tell a new, all-encompassing story.”
