A member of TT Games has explained LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight's unusually small number of playable characters.
If there's one thing TT Games' LEGO titles are traditionally known for, it's the huge number of playable characters, covering just about every possible figure from the source material. The upcoming LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is breaking this mould by having just seven playable characters in the base game, and two in DLC.
Those characters are Batman, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Jim Gordon, Talia Al Ghul, and Catwoman. The Joker and Harley are also in a DLC for nine total characters, and each has a variety of suits to equip.
For comparison, The Skywalker Saga had 384 in the base game and over 400 with DLC. Ultimately, many of these characters had similar abilities and animations, and that's part of the reason why TT Games is refining the focus in the Batman title. Head of the TT Games development team, Jonathan Smith, spoke to IGN following the Fan Fest reveal earlier this week, sharing more insight into the unusual change.
“We're taking these individual characters on a journey,” Jonathan states. “So you are constantly upgrading and developing new skills and opening up new abilities for each of those characters. Within the Bat family, as well, we really wanted to focus on making those characters really unique, making their personalities come across and their abilities very distinct.”
This echoes some of the critiques of the huge character selection in The Skywalker Saga, as the ethos for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight appears to be quality over quantity. Nine characters are a tiny selection compared to other LEGO games, but they're seemingly more in-depth to play as.
“The story is more focused on a tighter roster of characters that are now more differentiated with much deeper gameplay,” Jonathan continues. “So they work well in partnership with each other, and we then want to give you lots and lots of options to see the full range of what those characters can be by giving you more than a hundred different suits to collect.

The interview continues, confirming that the suits you can collect for the various characters will be displayed in the Batcave. It leaves us to wonder just how this will look, and whether you will curate the selection on display, or if they are all on show at once.
"So you still get that moment in the Bat Cave where you've got all the different suits from all the different characters arrayed in front of you, colourful and glorious," said Jonathan. "You're still compelled to want to complete that collection.”
The Batcave hasn't been prominent in footage for the upcoming game so far, but we know that it is customisable in some way through props in DLC packs. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will be released on May 29, 2026, with early access for deluxe edition owners. There's still time to save on this edition at online retailers, too.
