Despite being a family-friendly video game, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight still manages to treat potentially sombre moments with plenty of humour.
LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight continues TT Games’ winning trademark brand of humour, peppering the developer’s new interactive title with a healthy dose of slapstick, pop culture jokes and gags-a-plenty. That ability to laugh at almost any given situation certainly comes in handy considering the brooding world of the Caped Crusader, as discussed by the latest actor to voice the DC Comics character.
Shai Matheson recently chatted to Brick Fanatics in an exclusive interview and explains why now was the right time for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight to emerge and how its lighthearted approach to its subject matter can sit shoulder-to-shoulder with other existing interpretations of the World's Greatest Detective.

“When they did that run of films, starting with Batman ’89 and ending with Batman & Robin," says Shai, “I think the reason it didn’t hit so much was because it just became fantastical and zany and then we needed a reset. And I think we get a reset every few years. We’re in a great age of Batman at the moment.
“Our story is an amazing, lovely Batman story that’s completely silly. And then we have the Matt Reeves [The Batman] story that is equally incredible – both happening at the same time, both answering different needs, but the same needs.”

The LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight voice actor goes on to flag up how key sequences in the game that deal with familiar tragedies are given the full TT Games humour treatment, such as the death of Bruce Wayne’s parents and the demise of The Flying Graysons.

“We don’t need to sort of harp on about, you know, ‘where are Robin’s parents?’” chuckles Shai. “I love those memes from the game that are going around now that lean into it, like young Bruce going, ‘I don’t want my life to change!’ All these memes going, ‘who’s gonna tell him?’ But it’s great!
“Even in this game, you know, the fact that we sort of bring Arkham, which is the darkest Batman telling of our age, to LEGO, and make them work together, that’s the genius of TT Games. The fact that it works and this character can accept all of that and encompass all of that – it’s incredible.”
