76304 Batman Forever Batmobile is a fragile build that takes up more space than feels necessary, but under the right conditions, it looks great on the shelf.
Definitely more of a display piece than a plaything, this set feels temperamental. If it doesn’t have enough space on the shelf or ample lighting, it can seemingly disappear into the night, but give it pride of place and make sure it’s well-lit, and it’s a fitting tribute to an often-overlooked Batman cinematic classic.

Even a quick glance at the LEGO DC Super Heroes line-up of sets in any given year makes one thing clear: Batmobiles are the theme’s bread and butter. There are small Batmobiles, large Batmobiles, and going back a few years, it’s possible to find practically any major cinematic Batmobile in LEGO form.
With so many of these cars already represented in LEGO, the Batmobile from Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever needs to work hard to stand out from the crowd. The good news is that the car’s unique design definitely draws the eye and provides something unique. The bad news is that the very features that make this model different to most Batmobiles are the aspects of the set’s design that are the most difficult to love.
Batman Forever, more so than previous live-action Caped Crusader outings, is a film that was created to sell toys. This Batmobile's design feels like a reflection of this, coming complete with a massive fin on the top (all the better for kids to grasp when playing with their toys) and crisp blue tint (all the better for standing out on store shelves).
On the one hand, this fin helps to give the set a unique appearance, and when placed on the shelf, it certainly does look imposing and impressive. It also means, unfortunately, that the model takes up more space than it would otherwise. Those who are able to dedicate the real estate necessary to display 76304 Batman Forever Batmobile in style will not be disappointed with how nice it looks on the shelf.
76304 Batman Forever Batmobile is a great looking set, and in many ways it feels like an engineering marvel. A LEGO set based on this particular Bat-aesthetic simply shouldn’t look as good as it does, and getting in close to look at the build, it’s impressive just how much detail has been crammed into a Batmobile which, while by no means small, is far from the largest of these cars that the LEGO Group has produced in the past.
As vibrant and striking as Val Kilmer’s Batmobile may look, it isn’t a shape that translates particularly well to LEGO. The car is textured with a black ribbed design which cannot have been easy to replicate in brick-built form, and while the solution here is admirable, it’s not particularly well-anchored.
The sides of the model feature a row of spikes, a single stud wide, which stand out from the body of the car. While these look good when oriented correctly, brush against them by accident and they’ll rotate – in some cases pushing each other over like a stack of dominoes. There are a lot of different pieces on the outside of the set that can easily fall off, and as such, this is probably a set that will work a lot better as a display piece than as a plaything, simply because it feels like the slightest breeze could end up pushing some details askew.
The design element that really makes the Batman Forever Batmobile stand out from the pack is unfortunately one of the weaker features in this set. In the film, the Batmobile glows neon blue, creating a cool, icy look that makes the car’s impressive silhouette all the more visually stunning.
An attempt has been made here to replicate that glow, primarily through the use of transparent blue bricks. The problem is that, while these pieces look great on their own, they get lost a bit when surrounded by the oppressive black of the rest of the build. The light-sucking qualities of black LEGO bricks will be a familiar problem for LEGO Batman fans, but in a case when, for once, the LEGO Group has given fans a Batmobile that should literally shine, it’s a shame that these transparent bricks are overpowered so much that they’re barely visible.
Again, this problem will depend largely on how the set is displayed. In the photos in this review, with the set against a light grey background, these blue bricks can be seen clearly, but the elements are lost entirely on a darker shelf. This LEGO set, then, can potentially make for a great display piece – provided that it is displayed in an appropriate space.
If there’s a downside to the set beyond its fragile construction and understated use of blue, it’s the included minifigure. The Batman in the box is fine – it’s dark grey in colour and comes with the relatively new rubber cape, which is a nice inclusion, but it doesn’t exactly look like Val Kilmer.
This is not a new problem for this set – LEGO Batman minifigures rarely get special heads to reflect real-life actors portraying the character, but this feels particularly disappointing given that the set is releasing so close to Kilmer’s passing, at a time when his work is being revisited by many of his fans. It’s hard to get too upset about this missed opportunity given that the Batman minifigure in the box is perfectly adequate, but a Kilmer-specific face print would have added a lot to this set. (And let's not forget our running complaint about the catch-all cowl, which rears its head again here.)
More egregious than any minor quibbles with the Batman minifigure, though, are the lack of supporting characters. Even the smallest of other Batmobile sets currently on the market come with at least a single villain alongside the Dark Knight, and a set paying homage to Batman Forever feels poorer for lacking Two-Face or The Riddler.
Our honest opinion: 76304 Batman Forever Batmobile is not a plaything and some of its details can get a bit lost at times, but under the right lighting and display conditions, the build will make a great addition to any LEGO Batman collection.
