With 75331 The Razor Crest now retired but LEGO Star Wars contributing a full range of sets to tie in with the mammoth marketing effort behind The Mandalorian and Grogu, releasing at the end of May, there’s not a more timely moment to base the next Ultimate Collector Series set on Mando’s other very grey ship, the repurposed, stripped-back Naboo N-1 Starfighter.
In the form of

That’s not to say it’s a lot greyer than any of us would have hoped, given how shiny and silver the version we see Mando piloting on screen is. Given the already higher price-per-piece ratio this UCS set has, presumably because of the silver drum-lacquered pieces used across the front (to signify the break in the paintwork between the original silver and formerly yellow and now stripped back silver), it’s an easy conclusion to draw that budget impacted what was possible here.
The result more or less satisfies, but it does colour the build process somewhat – not that distinguishing between hundreds of silver LEGO pieces would have been any easier, but when you get a really grey LEGO Star Wars model (and let’s be honest, we’ve seen a fair few over the years), the experience doesn’t hold your full attention when at UCS level you’d expect otherwise.
It’s not a dull or simplistic build by any stretch, but it’s certainly a build best broken up into three or four sittings. Hidden beneath that sea of grey LEGO parts is a plethora of innovative and interesting building techniques. Across the board, the LEGO Group has really upped its game in recent years with its instructions for sets, and 75442 The Mandalorian’s N-1 Starfighter is no exception, for how a set with relative symmetry not once feels repetitive to put together. The pacing of the build is good, blending a nice mix of intricacy and achievement. Whilst the intricacy is a bit harder when everything is one colour, it’s still pretty interesting, and the sense of progress at the end of each bag is substantial – you’re building as big as you are building detailed.

The build behind

It’s impressive in size, design and looks and, in part for imagining how much a truly all-silver version would cost, the colour isn’t too hard to accept in the end. The included minifigures are inevitable for who they are, but it’s a bit of a shame that there’s nothing exclusive about them.
And when value is at the forefront of consideration for this set, that’s a more significant observation to include. Ultimately,
