LEGO Art 31218 Japanese Cherry Blossom Landscape review

LEGO Art 31218 Japanese Cherry Blossom Landscape has big shoes to fill, yet somehow manages to bring the best of everything that came before into one set.

With a long line of impressive LEGO Art sets, as well as some stunning Japan-inspired LEGO sets in other themes, there's some decent competition for 31218 Japanese Cherry Blossom Landscape already on shelves. As a concept, it's 21333 Vincent van Gogh – The Starry Night meets 21060 Himeji Castle – but can it live up to the high standards set by those two predecessors?

There is truly never a boring moment in the build of 31218 Japanese Cherry Blossom Landscape. Where some mosaic-style Art LEGO sets have been criticised for repetition, the same cannot be said for this upcoming release.

Every section of the set adopts new techniques, from the layered plates of the background in a stunning array of colours to the buildable elements with the trees, the bridge, and the tiny teahouse. The highlight of it all (although there are many) are the two cranes flying along the top of the pink-blushed sky, created using just seven pieces each but to excellent effect. Even up close, they are instantly recognisable and a detail that brings the entire landscape scene to life.

Coming in a close second is the waterfall, protruding from the set much like elements in 21333 Vincent van Gogh – The Starry Night, but in a far less fiddly and dominating way. The hinge that allows the end of the waterfall to either sit flat or trickle straight down when hung is a fantastic feature that speaks to the attention to detail and flexibility that is felt throughout the build.

The gradients of pink and blue, paired with pops of green, brown, and red throughout the smaller details, come together in a picture-perfect brick-built postcard of Japan. If the smaller postcard sets you can find by the till at most LEGO stores were souped up on thoughtful artistry, this would be the result.

Despite the level of detail, the build manages to be engaging without being overly complex, lending itself perfectly to relative newcomers to LEGO building – and what a first set to build. It's hard to think of another set that showcases the magic of so many building techniques without becoming overly fussy, but the various elements balanced throughout the artwork – because that's exactly what this is – are a masterclass in showing exactly what LEGO bricks can do.

With three different ways to build a tree, an ingeniously simple creation of a crane, a tiled gradient that blends just as smoothly as watercolours, and the perfectly scaled inclusion of a tiny classic Japanese teahouse, there's something new to discover at every stage.

All of this comes at a price of £99.99 in the UK, $139.99 in the US, and €119.99 in Europe, which feels like incredible value for a 1,892-piece masterpiece. That's a word that gets thrown around a lot for the LEGO Art sets, but we're not quipping by calling this a LEGO masterpiece; 31218 Japanese Cherry Blossom Landscape truly turns bricks into artistry.

With such a rich building experience and such an eye-catching display for your wall or shelf, 31218 Japanese Cherry Blossom Landscape feels well worth every penny. It may be slightly more expensive than some similarly-sized LEGO Art companions like 31208 Hokusai – The Great Wave and 31213 Mona Lisa, but the richness in the detail makes it well worth the slight extra investment.

If there's someone in your life that you think would love building LEGO, 31218 Japanese Cherry Blossom Landscape will easily convince them, not just in how it looks but in how artfully each section slides into place. The LEGO Art set strikes the perfect balance between simple elegance and creative complexity.

It all comes together to somehow create an intricate level of depth, with the final model of 31218 Japanese Cherry Blossom Landscape inviting you to step into rural Japan. If 21333 Vincent van Gogh – The Starry Night proved that LEGO bricks can look good in a frame and 21060 Himeji Castle was an ode to Japanese architecture and culture, 31218 Japanese Cherry Blossom Landscape does both – and, dare we say, does it better.
