LEGO Botanicals 10373 Mini Bonsai Trees review

10373 Mini Bonsai Trees is a calm, clever set that’s small in size yet rich in soul – not quite a new icon, but a worthy branch on the LEGO Botanicals family tree.

When 10281 Bonsai Tree hit shelves in 2021, it didn’t just grow on fans, it bloomed into a full-on fan favourite. Not only did it kickstart the wildly popular LEGO Botanical Collection, but it also redefined what an 18+ LEGO set could be: serene, display-worthy and brimming with genius parts usage (frog-shaped cherry blossoms, anyone?). Since then, we’ve seen the LEGO Group give houseplants, flowers and floral arrangements the brick-built treatment – and now the latest LEGO Botanicals set goes back to its roots with a more compact composition.

10373 Mini Bonsai Trees returns to the roots (pun absolutely intended) of the original set, offering not just one, but three pint-sized trees in a single box. Think of it as a bonsai triptych – one that celebrates the changing seasons, creative building, and the simple joy of LEGO in miniature.

There are 709 pieces split across six bags, with each bonsai tree getting its own instruction booklet. That means you can build them one at a time or tackle them simultaneously with friends or family. It's always a win when the LEGO Group leans into shared experiences.

Each bonsai tree is inspired by a real-life tree: the evergreen Japanese Black Pine, the Ginkgo tree with its distinctive yellow foliage and the beautifully calming lilac shades of the Wisteria. Traditionally when given as a gift each tree symbolises something different: the Black Pine represents patience; the Wisteria embodies serenity and strength; and the Ginkgo tree stands for endurance and resilience. Each tree subtly represents a different season too: spring for Wisteria, summer for Black Pine and autumn for Ginkgo.

They’re housed in their own distinct pots, all finished in a shared dark blue and brown palette that subtly ties the trio together and cleverly echoes this wave’s other set, 10372 Hibiscus.

Despite their compact size, these trees pack in plenty of building satisfaction. In fact, there’s something especially tactile about working with such small pieces. You’re constantly making micro-adjustments, laying tiny elements into position, and watching organic shapes take form in front of your eyes. Each tree trunk employs smart angles and subtle curves to achieve the right silhouette, while the pots and stands are satisfyingly symmetrical and stylish.

And the foliage? Pure LEGO botanical joy. The Ginkgo tree uses bright yellow butterflies to mimic its iconic fan-shaped leaves, and the effect is light, sculptural and instantly recognisable. The Black Pine swaps leaves entirely for a trio of Wolverine claws per branch, capturing the spikier look of pine needles. It’s not as dense as the real thing, but it gets the job done.

The Wisteria, meanwhile, steals the show: its cascading flowers are made from layered flower studs and lilac elements, giving the illusion of fluffiness. And look out for a hidden Easter egg nestled inside – a cheeky callback to the original 10281 Bonsai Tree that fans will absolutely appreciate.

These are beautifully-crafted models that look excellent displayed together or on their own, but more than that these bonsai trees also have crossover appeal for minifigure-scale builds. The gnarled trunks and elegant foliage would slot beautifully into a LEGO city park, castle courtyard, or NINJAGO-style garden scene. You can’t say that about every 18+ display set.

10373 Mini Bonsai Trees might not make the same bold statement as its larger predecessor, but it absolutely holds its own. With three well-designed trees, satisfying and tactile builds, and some classic LEGO creativity on show, this is a set that celebrates variety, elegance, and thoughtful part usage.
