The first-ever LEGO The Lord of the Rings Balrog landed on shelves this summer, but if you’re not into the book nook format there’s a much better version you can build with only one additional set.
10367 The Lord of the Rings: Balrog Book Nook presents an unexpected take on the whip-cracking, fire-breathing monster from the depths of Moria, entombed in a book nook format that’s shelf-friendly but perhaps not what most of us wanted from this scene in LEGO. The good news? Rebrickable user terauma has now cooked up a bigger and better Balrog statue. The bad news? You need a freshly-retired set…
Using 960 parts in total, this beefier Balrog combines 10367 The Lord of the Rings: Balrog Book Nook with 76289 Thor vs. Surtur Construction Figure, a LEGO Marvel set that’s wrapped up in much the same colour palette as its Middle-earth contemporary. The result is a more impressive and imposing statue that stands on a Moria-themed base, but without being hemmed in by the squared-off book nook housing.
Unfortunately, 76289 Thor vs. Surtur Construction Figure has just retired from production and is out of stock at LEGO.com (and through third-party retailers), so if you want to get your hands on it now your best bet is turning to the aftermarket. But it wasn’t exactly an expensive one to begin with, and if you aren’t bothered about the minifigures you can actually score just the pieces for a song on BrickLink right now, while even sealed copies are available for under £20.
10367 The Lord of the Rings: Balrog Book Nook, meanwhile, is easy to come by on sale at the moment. It’s down to £84.99 at Very, for instance, while Amazon has it for only £76.99 (at the time of writing) – or 30% off. So for under £100 all in (plus the cost of the instructions at Rebrickable) you too can build terauma’s Balrog statue, and add to your collection the set most of us were imagining for this scene from the start.
