Rumours of a new LEGO Batman Tumbler set have us looking back on the many previous builds of the Batmobile, and the categories they fit in.
Of all the Batmobiles recreated in LEGO sets, the Tumbler from the Dark Knight trilogy remains one of the most popular and has many models that fit neatly into one of three categories. The recent rumour of a new LEGO Technic Tumbler would mean something that doesn't fit into any prior category well enough, though it's just a rumour for now.
While we wait to see if there's any weight to the rumour or for any further details, here's a reminder of the LEGO Tumblers we've seen so far.
Tiny Tumblers
The LEGO Group's smallest Tumbler sets come in the form of a polybag and a magazine gift, opting for a similar foundation but with builds that change drastically the further you go through the model. It's been a while since we've seen a Tumbler in this category, but with the continuation of both polybags and the Batman magazine, another one is on the table.
Minifigure-scale Tumblers
Minifigure-scale LEGO Tumblers are some of the most common forms of the Batmobile in the LEGO portfolio, starting with 2008's 7888 The Tumbler: Joker's Ice Cream Surprise. This Tumbler is much bigger than any other depicted at minifigure-scale, but still fits into this category as the subject of a minifigure model.
Five years later, and 76001 The Bat vs. Bane: Tumbler Chase rolled onto shelves with by far the smallest minifigure-scale Tumbler in a tan colour scheme to match the third Dark Knight movie. The LEGO Group improved on this design in 2021's 76239 Batmobile Tumbler: Scarecrow Showdown, adding increased functionality through stud shooters.
The most recent LEGO Tumbler, and the only one still available, is
1:10 scale Tumblers
The LEGO Group's largest category of Tumblers comes in the form of approximately 1:10 scale builds, allowing the designs to capture a higher level of detail than in the smaller variants. This category includes 2014's 76023 The Tumbler and 76240 Batmobile Tumbler from 2021.
It will be interesting to see whether the rumoured LEGO Technic set fits into any specific category, but with the Technic line, it may well deserve its own label.
