DC Studios' promising future should shape LEGO DC sets

After a slow few years for LEGO DC, DC Studios' new production schedule suggests an exciting and fruitful future for both theme and franchise.

At a press event last week,  DC Studios co-leader James Gunn confirmed some interesting news for the future of DC Studios and the projects that are in the works, including some movies and shows facing issues and a new annual schedule. The Hollywood Reporter has shared the details of this press event, and exciting times may be ahead for superhero buffs. For those more interested in LEGO DC, the future of DC Studios should influence what's next for the theme too.

The press event saw James Gunn confirm that projects based on Booster Gold and Amanda Waller as well as The Authority have had trouble during development, though new projects such as a Clayface movie have taken priority over some of these troubled plans. Animated series based on Starfire, Green Lantern and Super Powers were also confirmed to be coming at the event, but most notably, DC Studios has a new annual schedule.

“Our production goal is two live-action films and one animated film per year, and we’re also targeting two live-action and two animated series for Max per year,” said Peter Safran at the event as stated by Comicbook.com.

That's a similar schedule to what Marvel is used to with its cinematic universe and the impact the MCU has had on LEGO Marvel is huge, to say the least. Whether the studio will be able to stick to these goals regularly is another question.

Despite LEGO DC's recent Batman-centric years, the sole focus on the Caped Crusader is slowly but surely changing with the launch of 76302 Superman Mech vs. Lex Luthor this past January. These confirmed plans for DC Studios and the upcoming arrival of the Superman film in July imply that it might be wise to keep one eye on LEGO DC over the next few years and beyond.

While no tie-in Superman 2025 sets have been confirmed or rumoured, the sudden release of 76302 Superman Mech vs. Lex Luthor is unlikely to be a coincidence, showcasing how this new era of DC is already starting to change the theme – arguably for the better.

Aside from the Superman mech, LEGO DC's confirmed and rumoured 2025 slate is focused solely on Batman though rumours are to be taken with caution. Despite the reliably bat-focused selection, it will be worth keeping a close eye on LEGO DC over the next few years with these ambitious plans in place, especially after however Superman performs this summer.
