After LEGO Marvel 76314 Captain America: Civil War Battle's early reveal, how does it compare to its 2016 predecessor?
76314 Captain America: Civil War Battle, due for release in January 2025, recreates one of the most iconic moments from the MCU's Infinity Saga, when Team Cap and Team Iron Man faced down at an airport. It saw the Avengers battle one another for the first time and laid the groundwork for so many superheroes appearing on screen at the same time ahead of Infinity War and Endgame.
This isn't the first time that the scene has been tackled by LEGO Marvel designers, however. Back in 2016, 76051 Super Hero Airport Battle came out depicting the same scene – but in a very different way. Here's a look at what's changed with nine years in between the sets.
Ant-Man loses his LEGO energy
The biggest change has to do with the biggest element of both sets: Giant Ant-Man (or Gi-Ant-Man, if you want to get punny with it). In the earlier set, the supersized superhero was designed to look like an enormous minifigure, with blocky feet and limited posability.
In 2015, the brick-built Ant-Man takes its lead from other buildable characters like 76257 Wolverine Construction Figure and, of course, 76256 Ant-Man Construction Figure. The limbs are fully posable, from the ankles to the shoulders and neck, leaning more into human proportions than minifigure ones – although still being skinnier than the on-screen version.
Minifigures are redesigned and expanded upon
The actual minifigures have all received updated versions for 2025, as well as adding Black Panther, Black Widow, and Falcon to the mix, losing Agent Carter in the process (an odd inclusion in the first place). The same core cast is there, with Iron Man, Captain American, Spider-Man, Scarlet Witch, War Machine, and Bucky, but they've all got new looks and generally speaking more detailed printed, although arm and leg printing is limited to just a few characters.
A greater focus on display
Zooming out on 76314 Captain America: Civil War Battle, those changes come together for a set that works equally well for play and display. The inclusion of a base tying together the characters and scenery means that it can easily slot onto a shelf, rather than the separate parts of 76051 Super Hero Airport Battle. We may have lost some detail on the Quinjet and some of the airport buildings but the set is tied together more, leaning into the style precedent set by 76291 The Avengers Assemble: Age of Ultron.
That echoes a wider push in LEGO Marvel and beyond, also in Star Wars and other franchise-focused themes, to balance play and display. It's no secret that the LEGO Group wants to appeal to both adults and young builders and sets like these attempt to straddle both age groups.
