Mark Hamill has joined the LEGO Group as its Junior Executive Director of Information, and later this week you’ll have the chance to talk to him live about LEGO Star Wars SMART Play.
On April 8, LEGO fans dialling 1-877-80-ASK-MARK between 12pm and 8pm ET will be able to listen to Luke Skywalker actor Mark Hamill relay trivia about the newly-released LEGO Star Wars SMART Play sets, and select callers will apparently also be ‘invited to join a live video chat’, reports USA Today. It’s all part of Hamill’s new role as the LEGO Group’s Junior Executive Director of Information (or J.E.D.I.).
“I love that they gave me an actual title,” the actor told Nerdist, before holding up a plaque emblazoned with his job role. “I’m gonna ask if I can keep it.”
Hamill is the latest household name pulled into the orbit of the LEGO Star Wars SMART Play marketing blitz, following C-3PO actor Anthony Daniels’ guest appearance at Nuremberg Toy Fair back in January. In the build-up to his hotline appearance, Hamill – who most recently voiced Luke in LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy – has spoken to a couple of media outlets from a LEGO Star Wars-themed office.
“My concept of LEGO was, you know, all the bricks you need,” he told Nerdist. “You could buy specialised sets if you wanted to build a specific thing. But it’s amazing how they have incorporated the most modern technology. Now they have these things called a SMART Brick, that you place into the toy, and… look at what it does. It’s so cool.”
Hamill revealed that he owns a classic Luke Skywalker minifigure in his Tatooine garb from A New Hope, and quipped that the LEGO Group ‘finally got the hair colour right’. “When I first came out as a Kenner action figure, I had lemon yellow hair,” he explained. “They told me, ‘Well, because that’s the basic colour they have, and you’re considered a blonde.’ Even though I have brown hair. But I didn’t care. I just loved it.”
